I am actually glad they didn't kill off any heroes (except Leia but she doesn't really count) this time around. Fwiw, I wouldn't have minded them killing off R2D2 or C3PO in one last heroic moment since it's the end of the skywalker saga.
I thought they should have had Chewie die and kept 3PO's memory wiped instead of coming back later on both accounts and basically saying "nevermind they're fine." That would have been an honorable sacrifice two OT characters without being over the top.

was it Han's from ANH that Leia would have wanted him to have in the event of his death?
This. Leia was holding it when she was on her deathbed.
I was confused about that when I started seeing spoilers out of the initial viewings with people saying things like "Chewie finally gets his medal!" Not really, more like he inherits Han's medal.

Because he was struck down and became more powerful than Vader could ever imagine...

The Force wasn't explained in the original trilogy and that made it cool.
It was explained. Obi-Wan gave us a primer in the very first movie. Yoda went deeper into the explanation when he was training Luke in Empire.

Recently saw it avoided all spoilers/leaks and most reviews and while it’s not an all timer of a movie it was very solid imo and given the shite hand he was dealt by TLJ an overall incredible job by jj Abrams. I do agree with Ohiovol that it could have been more fleshed out across two movies but oh well.
I do agree with critics that some things were a middle finger to rian but unlike the critics I absolutely loved that. In fact I chuckled out loud at the beginning when they ask “rose are you coming with us and she says no I’m gonna stay here” which essentially removed her from the plot.
Imo it’s a solid middle tier star wars film in the area of return of the sith TFA ROTJ but in context of having to follow up a film that literally attempted to burn down the mythology of 7 films and multiple series before it it was w solid triple. Maybe not w home run but I will definitely go see the next Star Wars film in theaters whereas I was refusing until the couple reviews I saw were offended because it undid Johnson’s work. Which is the ironic given he undid so many others before him

Just saw.
It wasn’t bad. Just ok. There wasn’t as much eye rolling preachy shite.
However it was just so fricking corny. Everything was so over developed into emotional appeals that fell flat. And John Boyega just thinks dramatic screaming is acting.

Absolutely.
And im honestly shocked that Oscar Isaac was the leader of the cringe parade.

Finally went to see this the other day..
Personally enjoyed it but the stench from episode 8 was still lingering.. felt Abrams did an admirable job of course correcting and untangling the mess left behind. The only problem being that it made the film become to rushed

After the hole dug by The Last Jedi, I think they should have just said frick it to the trilogy format and made two different movies. This movies biggest problem, IMO (and I’m sure this isn’t exactly a fresh new opinion) is it tried to combine two movies (one to undo the damage from episode 8 and one to conclude the series) into one movie.
Exactly. There were early talks they would do this but they decided not to. Big mistake. Could have been salvaged if they had done a 9 & 10

It was VERY clear Abrams intended to go the Avatar route (refer to "I am all thousand Jedi, Sith") but had to adjust due to the death of Snoke and Kathleen Kennedy's meddling with the reintroduction of Palpatine.
Thereby rewriting her as a Palpatine instead of a generational embodiment of the force aka Anakin (which would have explained how touching Anakin's lightsaber "awakened" the force within her).
Overall the movie offers fan service to the low hanging fruit crowd, but technically it's a jumbled mess throughout.

All in all, I liked it. It was respectful enough of the OT lore and characters while still feeling like they were making some sort of effort to move the story of the new characters along.
I feel the same way. Glad I saw it and that TLJ is not what I’m stuck with remembering as the focal point of the trilogy.

Finally saw it myself.
I respect what the enormous task JJ had in front of him given what RJ, but it still wasn't that good.
I could write a massive essay, but ending on the very thing, power over life and death, which is referenced as being part of the dark side is super problematic. I'm glad he spent the time trying to fix what happened, but it just didn't work. I like the fan service, but that's all the movie ended up being.
And Ben got the shaft on pretty much every account, that sucked.

I finally watched it and its easily the worst of new trilogy.
Palpatine roaming around on that crane was fricking pathetic
.
I cant believe they brought him back, terrible decision.

The Palpatine stuff was laughably bad.
How could they bring him back?

, and the return of Palpatine was the best option
this is bullshite, he was never supposed to come back.
Fans cried their arse off after Snoke dying and they couldn't get over not getting his backstory that Disney panicked.
Palpatine was never supposed to be here.

I haven’t changed my mind about how much I hated bringing back Palps, his retarded death scene and Rey being his grandchild. None of it worked for me.
Bringing Palp back fricked over a lot of the OT in my opinion especially Vader.
Walking Dead Palp completely fricked up this new trilogy and made it a clown show.
That crane he was on tho

Saw it last night but can't ready through 36 pages. Answers please:
Is Kylo Ren like dead dead? And if so what happened between the bond between him and Rey?
When Rey calls herself Skywalker at the end, what was that about? Did she just decide to call herself that?
And THEY FINALLY GAVE CHEWIE HIS MEDAL!!!!

That was pretty much my exact point. They were backed into a corner regarding who was going to be the big bad guy.
