Not that I'm asking for it, but why hasn't their been a new Jaws movie since 1987?

We've had a plethora of shark horror movies, very few that are actually good, but I'm curious why we haven't had an actual new Jaws movie? I'm assuming it's do with whoever owns the IP keeping it under lock and key?

The Jaws sequels make the Star Wars sequels look like Lord of the Rings.

Because of Jaws 3D and Jaws: The Revenge. That's why.

Jaws 3D a

1st 3D movie I ever saw in the theater. Dad took me. The final shot of the shark swimming by the underwater control center window was absurd. RIP in Peace Louis Gossett Jr.

I’d also add there have been other well-known, non-Jaws shark movies (Deep Blue Sea, The Meg)

Jaws 3 is one of those bad movies that I love. A great white in Sea World. Almost an aquatic Jurassic Park

I'm not claiming they would be good, but I'm just surprised no one has taken a stab at another one in so long.

I think if you made a halfway decent shark movie and slapped "Jaws" on it, it would make a killing, without question.

I'm curious why no one has touched it in forever.

Jaws wasn’t big enough so The Meg happened.

Kidding, but I agree with the above: what more is there to say about Jaws?

i cant think of a single plausible way to make a sequel in the same universe that makes any sense. even Jaws 2, which is decent enough, still makes no damn sense. there's just not any way to logically explain a huge shark in the same unexpected place eating people more than once (or following a family from one place to another). the first one is so great because it could happen. the rest of them are silly from a plausibility standpoint. 3 and Revenge are silly movies in general (although i admit they are both still guilty pleasures).

a complete remake of the original could work (it would never be near as good, but theoretically it's possible)

a prequel of Quint on the Indy or something might work too, but what's the point? it would just be a WW2 movie with sharks. they've already made a couple movies about that incident anyways, so what is there really to explore. i guess it's possible with a really good creative group and strong writers.

We kinda saw the trajectory of Jaws after, Jaws the Revenge (Jaws targets certain "enemies" and hunts a specific family down no matter where they move, by water of course).

We saw it with Deep Blue Sea and Sharknado....the Shark has to become a Super villain, can't just be a dumb Shark. Once audiences rejected the human traits ascribed to Jaws in the Revenge, what was the point of climbing the disbelief ladder towards absurdity?

Jaws 3 would have been better not in 3d.

The problem is every director or writer has to go bigger and all of that. Jaws kept it simple.

I think what hurts new shark movies is we know so much more about sharks now and how they really behave. I mean shark week starts this month

I just got through watching all 4 a few weeks ago and Jaws 3 was by far my favorite.

NO NO NO NO NO. It's one of the last great movies we have without some crappy remake.

I wouldn’t mind special edition releases of the 4 Jaws films (especially 1 & 3) similar to what was done with the first Star Trek film or what Lucas did with Star Wars. Not necessarily all redone with CGI only but a blend of improvements on the original methods and newer ones. We all know the scenes that could use some improvement VFX-wise. Also expanding some scenes or adding some from previously cut footage.
