Maybe it's that famous clip of him being so smarmy and elitist and dismissive of Trump...claiming "Trump will be president “when spaceships come down filled with dinosaurs in red capes."
Over the years he's just become smug like Clooney...regardless of politics.
And then there's that whole pedo-ring thing. Plus, didn't we get enough of him in the 90's? He comes across now as that Uncle that has worn out his welcome...but wants to talk about the good ol' days.

He does come across as smug despite only making boring movies lately. He hasn't made anything I liked since Charlie Wilson's War in 2007. I haven't seen Greyhound, which is an interesting premise that he probably made boring.

I don't know how anyone could "hate" him, but I'm pretty bored with the ol' "Tom Hanks stares blankly into space and calmly delivers some raspy wisdom to the idiots around him" routine. I'm a guy who's always thirsty for new Westerns, and that trailer looks boring.
Saw The Paper recently, and it had some good dialogue and strong critiques of reporters being too close to their subjects. But every time he spoke, all I could think was that it was a lot more interesting watching the real Ben Bradley deliver those lines in old interviews.
Road to Perdition was great in part because he didn't play Tom Hanks in that one. Plus we got to see him in the shadow of the great Paul Newman.
I just think Hanks should be in the "quirky father-in-law" stage of his career, maybe go back to his comedy roots, but he keeps getting the serious leading man roles.
