Netflix is finally going after password sharing. Here’s how it’s likely to work

Netflix surprised the world this week, saying it plans to finally address the rampant practice of password sharing.

More than 100 million households are using a shared password, Netflix said Tuesday, including 30 million in the U.S. and Canada.

But the video streamer doesn’t plan to simply freeze those shared accounts. Instead, the company will likely favor the setting of an extra fee for those accounts being used by multiple people outside of the home.

Netflix’s plan to capture that lost revenue would start with an alert being sent to account holders whose passwords are being used by other households.

“If you’ve got a sister, let’s say, that’s living in a different city, you want to share Netflix with her, that’s great,” said Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters during the company’s earnings conference call. “We’re not trying to shut down that sharing, but we’re going to ask you to pay a bit more to be able to share with her and so that she gets the benefit and the value of the service, but we also get the revenue associated with that viewing.”

I feel like they may regret this.

They will. They may make some money at some point, but it seems like most people would just do without as opposed to paying more. Especially with the amount of other streaming platforms there are out there these days.

Yep. When they get rid of account sharing I’ll just cancel, and go back to torrenting the 1 out of 50 shows they put out worth watching. The only reason I keep it is because my family uses it.

Well, that's gonna bring the customers back.

I cancelled and switched to HBO Max. Content is too stale to charge more than HBO...they're full of themselves and living on their OG reputation.

I am in the same boat. I rarely ever use Netflix except some things for the kids and my parents share my password. They do this on top of the increase cost, I'm cancelling.

I’ll give my kids the main access for their homes and cancel mine. The HBO Maxes and Disney +’s that encourage families watching from multiple homes and offices will benefit from this.

Is my workplace Roku a separate account?
My wife’s phone is separate from my account?
If I’m watching from the gym is that too far from my home?

I hope everyone's predictions of doom for Netflix are accurate. I've subscribed to Netflix for nine years now. I pay $19.99 for four simultaneous streams. I have five profiles set up, two of which are for friends* outside of the house. There's never been an issue of exceeding four streams. No one in this group watches Netflix more than I do, and I'm willing (going) to cancel Netflix if they implement this.

Actually what I would probably do is subscribe to Netflix for two or three months a year so people can catch up on the latest movies and TV seasons, and then cancel until the next year. I'll use the money saved for other streaming services.

*or I can say I have two kids at college

I forgot to add, maybe Netflix shouldn't spend $30 million for a single episode of a TV series?

I do see their side of this, when you’ve got a six people living in six different cities using one Netflix account it has got to be frustrating for the company. At the same time, all this is going to do is lead to a bunch of people canceling their Netflix, do they not see this?

How does that work when I travel and the hotel has Netflix as an option to stream? I need to pay extra to use that?

Yeah, I have lots of questions about traveling, my kid using it in college, and using my account at my parent's house.

If they hassle me I'll just cancel too. Kid's primary use it and they've gravitated more towards Prime lately. We can do without Netflix.

This is going to backfire on them spectacularly.

I share my account with my retired Dad who lives across town as well as my Grandmother (who is on a fixed income). I also use it when I travel and when I’m at work. The SO’s account is shared with his daughter who is with us part-time so she uses it at our house and at her Mom’s.

They can frick right off.

They already do this, they just must be stepping it up. Family member had to pay extra when his kids went to college and the login was being used in three different cities. This was 3 or 4 years ago. They e-mailed him and he was ok with the small up-charge.

You realize that those hotels have signed agreements with Netflix?

I travel with a Firestick and plug that into the TV so I can stream. There are plenty of hotels that don't have an agreement with Netflix.

It's like these companies can't just be happy being successful and turning a handsome profit. They have to squeeze every last penny until people just get fed up and stop buying their product. Then they wonder why their company loses business and starts losing money.

What counts as "password sharing" exactly?

Like our Netflix account has a profile for the Mrs. SFP's mother. I always figured that was Ok b/c there are limits to the screens available. Is that "password sharing"? It's more theoretical b/c I don't think the future MIL ever logs in.
