Highlander

The sequel nearly killed the franchise, and it's kind of a miracle it didn't.

Caddyshack is the answer but....
Saturday Night Fever...Staying Alive
Space Jam....Space Jam II
Independence Day...Independence Day Resurgence

Honorable mention what they did to Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

The Exorcist is one of the greatest films of all time. Exorcist II is one of the worst films of all time.

pretty much any comedy (especially those in the last 25 years) . American Pie was one of the few to to do a really good job with a sequel (hell I even liked American Wedding).

I’m gonna say Terminator. It went from the original to the greatest sequel ever then the free-fall nosedive to everything that’s happened to the franchise since.

The Marvels is the most recent that comes to mind.
The Marvels is better than Captain Marvel (which is like Louisiana and Mississippi battling it out for the second to last least educated state, but still).

American Graffiti 2
More American Graffiti is not terrible, and its saving grace was that it was marketed so softly that few people knew that it even existed until it hit cable.
