I don't know about irrationally emotional, but I tear up regularly over father/son moments, the most recent being About Time.

I think I've gotten "irrationally emotional" more often over music (by myself) than I have with movies (usually watched with other people). When alone, some songs bring me back to a time/place of loss/reflection where the floodgates open.

Mine is going to be different than all you guys

The Bridges of Madison County. I cry like a baby at the end when she is in town with her husband and she sees Clint and is trying to make the decision to stay with her husband or go with Clint.

Oh man that's a good answer.

Any dog movie is a good answer for this question though.

Most entries in this thread are sad movies, or super sweet/sad parts of movies, etc. I thought this was supposed to be movies that made you "irrationally" emotional? These are all supposed to make you feel things

this somewhat reminds me of something that intends to tug on heart strings, but not to the extent it does for me

that movie had no business almost making me cry in the theaters when i first saw it

*ETA: i don't mean the part referenced earlier in this thread involving Harry. i mean specifically when the kid runs out (couldn't find a gif of it)

Big Fish

saw this in theaters. probably the hardest i've had to hold back from crying in a movie

went with 2 friends. female friend was inconsolable. male friend was hiding his crying

the right presentation of father-son reconciliation after years of unresolved issues will hit me hard

Not sure how “About Time” has not made the suggestion list. That one has big ole heart tuggings.

LOTR: Return of the King

The coronation scene when Aragorn tells the hobbits, "You bow to no one," with the unfolding of the rest of the scene.

Speaking of Lord of the Rings, it is Gandalf arriving in the Shire. The kids running up to Gandalf expecting the fireworks reminds me of my time when I was actually innocent. I remember the trees, plains, and hills where I grew up, and the occasional fireworks. Brings a tear to my eye: Gandalf arrives in the Shire

My Neighbor Totoro.

When we watched it as a family and the mom turns out ok, my daughter was balling. I asked her why she was crying and she said the little girl trying to get to the hospital to bring corn to her mom reminded her of her friend IRL whose mom died when they were in 5th grade. Absolutely ruined me. I can’t even think about it.

ETA: okay this isn’t irrational, but oh well

The funeral scene from Four Weddings and a Funeral gets me every time.

YouTube

quote:

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

W H Auden

“Earn this.” - Saving Private Ryan

I always thought it was a dick statement by the Captain. So many people died to get him safe and I’m sure he walked out understanding the gravity of that situation. Having someone throw that on you as their dying wish would be gasoline on a fire I imagine.

Regardless, it’s still a really powerful scene because the old Ryan collapsing in tears after the memory.

Friday Night Lights, the movie with Billy Bob Thornton.

When Boobie Miles gets in the car with his uncle after cleaning out his locker, realizing his career is over, and crying out "what are we gonna do, I can't play football no more!"

fricking kills me man.
