Every contestant must have a sad backstory about how they persevered. At least two shall tear up.

"Swordfish is really special to me because my grandmother was speared by one and passed soon after."

It takes forever to film the judging sequences. By the end the food has been sitting for well over an hour.

I read a behind the scenes on Chopped. They taste all of them immediately and then film more reaction/discussion

I will say that based on that article, chopped is pretty legit. They get the basket then get a little time (like 10 minutes or so) to walk around and plan their dishes then the clock starts.

It’s a grueling day as they have crews that clean the kitchen and restock everything and the judging sessions can often go 30-45 minutes. Plus they gotta film all the other random stuff.

It’s a 12-14 hour day if you make the final round

Good buddy was on Chopped about a decade ago. He said the time constraints weren't actually real, and by the time the judges got to taste the food, it had been sitting for at least an hour or two.

I hate the judges and their pretentious criteria sometimes
Raw onions are ok
Most pieces of fish I’ve had in my life have had bones
These aren’t grounds for disqualification

My favorite is them showing the countdown of the clock running out for a challenge, and somehow, without fail every time, every contestant is finishing JUST in the nick of time.

The Producers Cut of a regular half-hour show must be a week of footage....

Hours of mess ups, those "learning sessions" on some shows like Master Chef (where they bring in Chef tutors for each Home Cook, to show them how to make what these home cooks are supposedly making it on the fly.

I love how the "prize" for winning Hell's Kitchen was always "Executive Chef" at some elite Ramsey restaurant that thousands of experienced Chefs are probably applying for....only for the show to realize the carrot they were dangling in front of the Contestants face was way above their skill....so the prize, in the First Season switched at the end to "apprentice" or, will pay for your culinary school...to later seasons of where the promised job never materialized.... Because Ramsey still has a restaurant to run with Michelin stars. So most took a berating, just to be on TV.

Padma Lakshmi was the worst, she earned her chops on her knees in Paris as a "model", cheated on on two men, and had no credentials to be judging peoples food.

Always thought it would be a good SNL sketch to do something like "Top Mom Chef" and have the judges nit pick the food like my kids would..

"Karen your spaghetti.. what are these green specks? You see this green right here? What IS that? ....... I dont like it." never actually tastes it

"This mac and cheese may be from the same box that grandma uses, but it just doesn't taste the same."

"I would have loved to taste this dish, but I simply cannot without my Optimus Prime spoon from Sonic that melted in the dishwasher. For that reason, you are on the chopping block."

Don't underestimate how much say the execs have. Jay Ducote should have easily won Next Food Network Star. Eddie Jackson was terrible, especially as a chef. Notice that he doesn't get to actually cook things on that network? They picked him because he is a buff, former football player, while Jay is a big teddy bear.

And this is why Iron Chef is the GOAT food challenge show.

The original Japanese version. Iron Chef America was good, the original Iron Chef was the best.

He was on there with Monroe Chef Cory Bahr. Cory had watch parties during that season. He and Jay got along. I think either Jay or Cory should have won but yet some goofy quirky baker guy from Kentucky won with all that goofy Kentucky schtick. Cory told us how the edits were and how most everyone hated the guy who won but the producers had already selected him because they could t choose between he and Jay.

I like British Baking Championship the best. They have the blind challenge, the hosts are likeable. However, I do think they take looks into account when narrowing down a champion. Look at their past champions. It isn't a list of whom you would think of as an English baker.

I usually just watch to see what they come up with. Cutthroat kitchen was a good funny one. The others usually are ok. Never could get into the Worst Cook thing. You can tell that one is super fake.

I watch Chopped occasionally and I really wish I could see an episode where somebody made something and they tell them it tastes like shite!

they always talk about how nice british competition shows are and how cutthroat american competition shows are

but no one ever talks about how GBBO makes them temper chocolate in a tent in summer every season and gives them the least reliable ovens.
