His green halo comes from his ancestry and activates out of desperation when he is trying to protect a loved one.

His character development from 9 when he's an arrogant prick to X when he is a loving father and completely dedicated to Sonya even though she treats him like shite and divorces him to 11 when he is slapping the shite out of his younger self for embarrassing Cassie is some quality character development.
Sonya is a count anyways. Needs to be a timeline where he says to hell with her and return to hollywood after the 1st tournament.

I kinda wish I had read this before watching. I kept thinking that he was going to turn into some kind of conduit for Scorpion to come back from the dead - basically that he would be possessed by Scorpion and turn into a straight badass. To the point that when he was fighting Goro in the shed, I was certain that he would pick up a spade and that would be the moment shite hit the fan.
Needless to say, I was very confused and disappointed when he got his armor.
I feel like picking up a spade and turning into Scorpion would have been WAY more satisfying. Oh well, the Scorpion fights were still great.
I thought the same exact thing. The way he kept dreaming of Hanzo made me think that during the scene where Sub-Zero is trying to stab him with Hanzo's dagger it'd do some shite like phase into his hand then at the peak of the fight he'd launch it out through Sub-Zero's skull.
I can't be mad about Hanzo coming back and getting his revenge but I agree with the rest of the posts saying Cole is useless.

I think that some of you guys might be expecting a little too much. This movie was aimed at people who used to play the game when they were kids, not people who have followed every bit of MK canon since then. They picked the most memorable characters, made it more violent than the 90’s movie, and teased a sequel with even more.
My one gripe about the movie is that they had Jax and Reiko fighting on the bridge and no one went into the spike pit.

Oh I still enjoyed it. I was nudging my wife (who couldn't give a shite about MK) every time there was a throwback to the games/original film. I'd watch a sequel

I think the only reason people are expecting a little more is because there’s actually a good movie to be made with MK if WB didn’t dumb it down and give us Cole. I mean shite just watch the first 7 minutes. It’s great. Then Cole comes and the entire thing goes to shite. Replace him with Cage and the whole movie changes. The tone of the movie likely changes as well because then you have two wise cracking guys with Cage and Kano that embrace the silliness of it all, which is needed. Video Game movies take themselves too seriously.
You also don’t have a stupid plot device to hold back Scorpion and Sub Zero fighting so you can likely see Sanada act more (who did a great job) and you can still have their epic fight. You can just have the movie being about how they need to find fighters but also free Scorpion from the Netherrealm to join them. It’s obvious they didn’t want to do a tournament movie, but struggled to come up with a meaningful plot without it but still wanted to give a tease of what they could do with more budget. I hope they get their shot.

I’m not a cannon kind of guy with MK and I hate fighting games because I suck at them but I know a bad fit when I see it. Cole does not fit. He does not belong.

I consider myself a casual MK fan and enjoyed it on that level. Helped I got to watch it on my couch for free with a few beers.

This movie is getting far more hate than I thought it would. I get some of the gripes, but it was much better than some of the comments I've seen in here.
If you want over-the-top, the 90's movie was more campy and fantastical, with better humor.
If you want to play it straight (which would have been interesting), then follow the tone set in the opening scene. MK fans are older, not 13 yr olds at this point. Both Marvel and DC are taking wild characters and putting them in 'realistic' movies, to varying success. You absolutely could have done that with this concept.
If you want fights, ... I'm watching Warrior on HBOMax right now. The guy who played Sub Zero is in that show. His fights are better in that show; and he's not 'far and away' the best fighter on that show. There's a lot of great fight scenes. Ah Sahm, Young Jun, Leary, Hong, they all have fights way better than anything here, as well as the afore-mentioned guy... and those fights occur within an interesting plot.
Maybe THAT'S why I'm so critical of this film; it doesn't deliver anything top-tier, other than the opening scene.

Gosh...
The first 10 minutes was great.
The rest...meh.
No tournament?

Johnny Cage or Takeda
Takeda Takahashi? I assume you mean Kenshi, his father.
The two of them have a great story though. Su Chin (Kenshi's wife) is murdered by the Red Dragon (Kenshi was the target) and Takeda is entrusted in Hanzo's care to protect him. He asks Hanzo to lie and say that Kenshi abandoned him and grows up hating his father.

We’re barely scraping the surface of MK with the film and you’re hitting bedrock with the stuff you spew

Yeah someone like him would never have been happy with a MK film. It's impossible to match his expectations.
He's going full OML in this thread.

The best opening (games or films) is still 9. It shows the battlefield littered with bodies of combatants around the pyramid, pans out to show more and more dead until it hits the top with Raiden and Shao Kahn as the last ones standing. Then, "He...must...win" happens.

Has it been mentioned in this thread who Subzero was avenging? He said the name but with no context, unless I missed it.

Pretty sure he just said he was doing it in the name of the ninja tribe he was a part of

Lin Kuei = Chinese clan of assassins (Sub-Zero, Sektor, Smoke, Cyrax, Tundra/Younger Sub-Zero, Frost, etc.)
Shirai Ryu = Japanese clan of ninjas (Scorpion, Takeda Takahashi, Jaqueline Briggs-Takahashi, etc.)

Cole just sucks and his power just sucks.
as if Sonja and Jax are good. They are shite characters, and have always been. Johnny cage is shite, but he has character, and having a cocky, dickhead,on the good side isnt always bad.
Gotta move on from Jax, sonja, and Cole

Probably the biggest problem I have with this film- it was weak and lackluster overall.
But it was pushed as a big new release action movie. If it would have been JUST direct-to-HBOMax, I'd say ... meh. Something new and distracting for an hour and a half. That wasn't the case, it followed WW84 (a clunker, but a pretty anticipated DCU movie, following the best DC movie as yet released), Godzilla vs Kong (big budget monster movie), and some Denzel Washington crime flick I missed. This was supposed to be something worth your $15 to sit and watch on the big screen, in theory.

Could be just me, but i feel like they couldve did like Falcon & Winter Soldier etc, and ran this into a couple episodes and a few seasons and it would be more electric. I still enjoyed it. Gonna have to watch it again on my TV, bc i watched it on my phone during a roadtrip bc i didnt want to see spoilers over the weekend lol

After reading comments, it's clear, i fell asleep while watching this movie.
I don't remember Goro fighting anyone, let alone that Cole chump.
