Johnny Cage has one of the best arcs in the series since 9. His green halo comes from his ancestry and activates out of desperation when he is trying to protect a loved one. His character development from 9 when he's an arrogant prick to X when he is a loving father and completely dedicated to Sonya even though she treats him like shite and divorces him to 11 when he is slapping the shite out of his younger self for embarrassing Cassie is some quality character development.
His arcade ending for 11 when he sees the problems he goes through after beating Shinnok, then rehab, etc. and STILL allows it to play out, knowing he needs it to be a better man is proof of that.

It had some cool moments, but overall pretty meh.

Watched on Friday and it was everything I wanted it to be.

Sort of, but then he doesn't even get to unleash the stored-up power. It just turns into shitty blades.
This movie is getting far more hate than I thought it would. I get some of the gripes, but it was much better than some of the comments I've seen in here.

Don't know how to feel about this one. Right now I'm stuck between this was trash/it was kinda ok.

What? It’s fricking Mortal Kombat, actually the games are far more gruesome.

I kinda wish I had read this before watching. I kept thinking that he was going to turn into some kind of conduit for Scorpion to come back from the dead - basically that he would be possessed by Scorpion and turn into a straight badass. To the point that when he was fighting Goro in the shed, I was certain that he would pick up a spade and that would be the moment shite hit the fan.
Needless to say, I was very confused and disappointed when he got his armor.
I feel like picking up a spade and turning into Scorpion would have been WAY more satisfying. Oh well, the Scorpion fights were still great.
I also found myself very distracted with the question of how “get over here” is the only English phrase Scorpion knows.

I’m a pretty big MK fan. So for me I’d give it a 6.5/10. Maybe a 7. There’s just so many structural problems with it. The tone is all over the place. The worst thing they could have done was not deciding whether to play it straight or embrace the cheesiness of it and Kano’s jokes embrace the cheese while the rest just play it normal and serious. It’s weird. Then there’s the pacing. Beginning and ending are great but the middle is a complete slog with meh fights.
But the big problem is Cole. It’s pretty obvious it was a WB push to have an original character that the audience could relate to be the focus instead of just using Johnny Cage or Takeda from the new games who have established character traits and things the writers could use to give the main character some kind of personality. Cole could have been cool but it’s clear the writers and director REALLY like Mortal Kombat but very much did not like Cole. He’s boring, useless for most of the movie, makes baffling decisions that make no sense and has no redeeming qualities. The joke from the writers is that his power is plot armor
Raiden and Shang Tsung were miscast as well. But still, there are redeeming qualities. Kano is great. Everything with Sub Zero and Scorpion was great. It was cool seeing the Easter eggs and seeing them actually use their powers in their fights unlike the 95 version. The effects on their powers was also handled well. Goro looked good. I just hope it makes enough to where they can kill off Cole and make Cage the new main and throw some money into the sequel.
