let alone that Cole chump.

He’s literally the main character of the movie so I don’t see how that’s even possible

No, he went from "Iron Man" Tony Stark to "Avengers:Endgame" Tony Stark.

if you fell asleep around when Cole went home you'd only need a 10 minute nap to miss it.

Could be just me, but i feel like they couldve did like Falcon & Winter Soldier etc, and ran this into a couple episodes and a few seasons and it would be more electric.

Yep. Have season one introduce key characters and groups and end with the words, "Round 1, FIGHT".

I guess I misread his post. I thought he meant he didn’t remember the Cole character at all

I think that some of you guys might be expecting a little too much.

You think it's too much to expect a movie about a fighting tournament to have an actual fighting tournament or to use one of the 97 ready made characters as the main character instead of creating the world's most boring protagonist?

quote:

This movie was aimed at people who used to play the game when they were kids, not people who have followed every bit of MK canon since then.

This was not just aimed at people who played MK 1 and 2 in the early 90s.

To make things easy let's say your definition of an adult is 21 and that a kid is up to 13 years old.

That means there were kids playing MK as recently as 2008. Ignoring variants like Mortal Kombat Gold '99, the 3 non fighting game prequels like MK Mythologies: Shaolin Monks '05, and the non canon crossover Mortal Kombat vs DC '08 that puts the it at 7 games in the main series w/MK1 '92, MK2 '93, MK3 '95, MK4 '97, MK:Deadly Alliance '02, MK:Deception '04, and MK:Armageddon '06.

Just b/c you only played the games in the early 90s doesn't discount the very large number of people who grew up playing MK who are much younger than you who would expect a movie to touch on the extremely deep story line the games have developed over the years.

On top of that, if it's just for the people who were playing MK1 and MK 2 it did a shite arse job of following the story line of those two games. Even with how much it diverged the original movie did a better job of actually adapting the story to those games.

So going back to the original "People were expecting too much" comment, well no people were expecting the new movie to actually adapt the story from the original games. Not come up with a bland arse main character that nobody could ever possibly like and to ignore the tournament aspect completely.

Scott Atkins, unless he is too old. Maybe Colby Covington.

Scanning through this thread I don't think I can say anything that already hasn't been said about this movie - the positives and the negatives.

With that said I did enjoy the easter eggs like Kung Lao saying Cole had to test his might.

However, the best easter egg was probably Liu Kang leg sweeping Kano 3 times in a row and Kano saying "Is that the only fricking move you've got?"

I probably yelled that exact question at my TV a million times playing that game as a kid.

Other Easter Eggs:

-Shang Tsung using Reptile's actual name (Syzoth), a name that you only figure out if you get the right intro dialogues between Raiden and Reptile in MKX

-The manuscript showing the Matoka tribe and Nightwolf in the Sky Temple

-The Jinsei Chamber in the Sky Temple

-When Bi-Han takes off his armor at the end, he looks like Noob Saibot

"Get over here" was definitely forced, especially when those are the only English words he says. Speaking of which, does Cole's Arcana allow him to understand Japanese? If not, how the hell would he understand what Scorpion was telling him at the end?

Am I the only one that hated the new scorpion and sub zero costumes?

The simple original ninja costumes are way cooler than the bulky samurai costumes they wore in the new one

Another thing that triggered me was how Scorpion's kunai was deployed from his sleeve and not his hand.

Just finished. I liked it. They had some bad though. Didn't like Liu Kang and Kung Lao's characters and they totally fricked up Kabal they tried to make him a funny character and it didn't work. Cole, raiden, sonya, Kano, sub zero and scorpion all ruled. Seems like this one was just a setup for the next. The very end makes you come with the biggest fist pump with the Johnny cage reveal. Also, some of the fights were a little short but the SZ vs scorpion fight absolutely delivered

That's more accurate to the games. If you look closely, in the later games it either hangs from his waist or is hidden in his sleeve.

I mean, they didn't ignore it completely. Not at all. It was referenced many times throughout the movie. And they even had specific dialogue from the bad guys that their plan was to attack and kill off Earth's fighters before the tournament to assure their victory.

And then despite all of that, we still got one on one fights (and several on one in the end) in specific locations (matching the games), including fatalities and gore.

That was more than enough to please me, and that's someone who only ever played the first two or three MK games back in the 90s like you mentioned.

I actually didn’t mind them not going for the tournament assuming they knew a sequel was coming

And we basically did get a tournament, just not the official one.

This sets up a lot of the back story for the tournament so for the sequel they just really have to introduce Johnny cage and they can hit the ground running and give us more of the actual tournament than even the original 95 movie did. My hope would be they just cut out the Cole character in the first couple minutes, then we get a Johnny intro, then they get to the tourney all within like 15-20 minutes of the sequel.

I also hope they actually explain how the tournament bracket works because i can’t figure out if it’s supposed to be like match play or just like they compare records like they do when comparing conferences during bowl season movie wise, a ton of people seem to survive for a tournament called Mortal Kombat

I thought it was fine enough. Thought they dropped the ball on Scorpion big time. When you see him in the animated movie Scorpions Revenge you will know what I mean. Sub Zero was cool. Thought they did well on him. Not a fan of the new character and him being a focal point was a problem. You have great characters as it is. Not sure why you need to introduce someone new. Especially when you have limited time to tell a story.

It was fine enough like I said. Better than Annihilation for sure. Action felt TV show or B movieish which was disappointing. Would have been a good tv show as some have said.
