If it isn't DH or Matrix, It's probably John Wick. Should win its bracket. Would be a travesty if it doesn't make the final four.
Wick is non-stop action for the video-game generation(s). First Blood is the iconic action movie, but it allows a silly thing like “having a plot” to get in the way of non-stop bullets and martial arts.
I suspect that John Rambo will get about 90% of the votes of anyone over 40 and that John Wick will get about 90% of the votes of anyone under 40.
This is a younger board, so the cartoon will beat the actual action film.

This is probably accurate, but I love Top Gun. One of my all time favorite movies. I also hate Gladiator. Men all love Gladiator. I liked it a lot, right up until the end. I hate the end with a passion. Don't kill my hero!

I would have been fine with that being the final. I'm going to have a hard time seeing me vote for anything else in the next round or two if it makes it that far. Die Hard has been a freight train so it's going to be hard to upset it.

I guess I just don't get it. I just don't see John Wick as being that great. Clearly I'm in the minority but I've voted against it in every round.

Sure it is. In a war, when you're in the thick of it, you're in the action. It's just showing the action on screen. If the opening scene isn't great action, I don't know what it. Not sure what other category it would best be described as unless you just have a war genre.

Aliens over Bourne is an easy one for me. More action in Bourne but if I can get sci-fi mixed in, that's going to give it the edge for me most of the time.

It is a rare opinion around here. John Wick is just such a pure revenge tale, man vs. man, etc. It doesn't need to be complex (even if the worldbuilding is a lot of fun). Heroism, at least generally, is about the will of a man to do the thing he sets out to do typically, and that's the soul of this film kind of taken to it's furthest length. It's even stated in the film itself.
Add to that absolutely fun sequences and it's about as pure as an action film as you can get.

But the tournament isn't best opening 45 min of an action film, it's a best action film. And in terms of man vs. beast - Predator and Aliens are the only ones left. And they are some of the very best at this. SPR just doesn't do anything but refine war movies, and it isn't even one of the best War movies, it's outside of the Top 5 as a complete film.
After the first 45 mins, the rest of the movie is just so blah. I don't see it.
Predator, much like John Wick, is kind of a pure environment film. man vs. nature and all that. And that final sequence of Arnold vs. the Predator is almost as interesting as the first 45 mins. of SPR, and it's a better action film throughout.
SPR is a drama more than an action movie. Like Jurassic Park and Gladiator, I think general love of the film is getting in the way of assessing it as an "action movie."

If Saving Private Ryan is an action movie, then so is virtually every war movie ever made. Top Gun is not an action movie either. Predator is in the dictionary under action movie.
