Episode 4 was a shite show

He actually went as a walk on. JB did seem to settle in as the season went on. I hated him more than Buddy at first, but in the end he’s better than Buddy personality wise. JB was still a dick to his coaches and he deserves plenty of flack for that, but it did seem like, in the end, he did care about the players.
Sad about Bruce, seemed like he was turning things around. Without many players returning I think it’s going to be hard for them to come back to ICC, but I’d enjoy one more season. Didn’t think I’d say that after the first four episodes. I think two seasons at a school is plenty.

Malik is 100% a CANCER. No one should give him a chance. What a POS. Can you imagine him saying the things he says to Saban?
Absolutely not, but I think it’s because there’s no way Saban would allow it to happen. Real elite CFB coaches are elite because they know how to take kids like Malik and actually get something out of them. If they can’t, they know when to cut bait, like Jimbo did with Malik. A repeated comment just in this thread is how a lot of these kids, even Malik, are a product of their environments. Well, that includes the present. Malik is a cancer because JB allows him to be. As I watched this season I wonder how many elite D-1 players would end up acting just like Malik if they were on this team. Can you imagine Rolando McClain at a Juco? He would literally become the first player to commit homicide during a game, but Saban turned him into a first team all-SEC linebacker and a permanent captain at Alabama.
Finally, elite coaches are true alpha dogs, and you know it by their results, not how much of a badass they act like. Saban, Urban, hell even Dabo would dick-slap JB so hard he’d lose accent, and make him follow them around holding onto their pants pocket turned inside out.

I don’t think anything made these kids hate Kansas more than watching that nerdy kid’s rap video. The whole segment about the rap video made me uncomfortable.
It is because he was bullied in high school.
But hey, he is doing something he loves that doesn't hurt anybody. But that autotune was hard on the ears.

Watching the recap
Ollie must live close to my office. Tomball HS coach met him and he was at the Shogun around the corner

the poor geeky kid who put together the music video for the team (which no one other than the mascot gave him any props for).
When it comes on there is a player who points up to the screen and says something along the lines of "This is the best part...."

Yea, Malik is a person you have to baby. You can't be too hard on him or he closes up like an oyster. Kinda reminds me of Jameis Winston....you have to cater to his feelings.

He was so damned proud of it too. That's what makes it worse.
It was hard to tell because of the editing, but it didn't really seem like there was any reaction other than a couple of players laughing and the old people in the stands being uncomfortable.
It seems weird to focus on the kid getting the video approved to show on the screen and then not really show better reactions towards it.

I figured they were hoping people on the team were going to laugh at it. They didn't so they just left it in there because people will talk about that guy for sure.

Okay, I finished the season last night.
JB ended up actually winning me over a bit toward the end. I actually feel pretty bad for Malik, even though I'd never want him anywhere near a football team I supported. He's clearly a cancer, but he's a product of his environment just as much as Bobby Bruce is. That's actually a pretty interesting character study, to compare how the two kids were raised in extremely different environments, but both are broken as hell.
As an Arky, I'll obviously be rooting the most for Boyd's success after the show, but Buck is right behind him. That kid was clearly handed a shite sandwich, but he showed nothing but work ethic and determination.
All that being said: how powerful is editing within docuseries like these? The directors can basically create the people and narrative they want through editing. They clearly made an effort to "redeem" JD in the last couple of episodes, cutting down on clips of him being an a-hole. I bet if you counted number of expletives from him in the last two episodes, it was way less as well.

Very powerful. They'll edit scenes from different days to move a story line along. Welcome to "reality" tv. This and hardknocks is the only reality shows I watch though.

Elite coaches are alpha dogs because they can recruit their asses off and have forgotten more football X’s and O’s Than your average coach will learn over their careers. They can also not put up with any shite because they have another 4-5 star recruit waiting in the wings if the other is a head case or a frick up.
JB doesn’t have that luxury. He needs those guys or he will end up with a slap dick QB like they had at the end of the year. It’s a fine line. Cut the shite heads and lose and get fired or coddle them, lose respect but win games and keep your job. A lot of your lower classification high school football teams are the same way.

That’s not how that works. Are you insinuating that most elite D-1 players act like Malik? I’ve never seen anyone as bad as him. And that is NOT how most kids who come from rough childhoods act. That’s how selfish kids act who think they’re entitled to something...but if Malik is going to act the way he did as a Major D1 prospect knowing cameras are going to be on him non-stop, he has some major issues that need sorted out and that is not normal for a high profile college athlete

First off, let me say that I didn’t see season 1 or 2.
This show, oh my god, what a fricking roller coaster and emotional drain. It’s like Friday Night Lights meets Any Given Sunday meets Hoops Dreams.
The coach comes off like such an a-hole at times but he really does care about the kids. When you see him talk to them one on one, you’re just blown away by the speeches and lectures.
The teacher is fricking amazing. She is such a good person and really relates to these kids on an incredible level. I truly believe that if these kids were stuck there for 2 years without the outside world bringing them back down, she could get these kids to graduate.
Carlos is the fricking man. I’ll be following him this year in D2 and really hope he gets to play some. He really took what coach said to heart and ran with it.
Bobby Bruce getting arrested for armed robbery broke my fricking heart. Him showing off his paper in the last episode and saying “I made this” was the most heartwarming moment of the show. I really feel coach fricked up with him some. He needed positive reinforcement. He responded to it. I don’t blame the coach, because he’s taking care of 100 kids, but it’s sad to think what if.
Malik came off like such a douche until episode 5 when his dad came in and told us how he made him play football over baseball. It all made sense then. This kids an a-hole because he’s fricking miserable. That cafeteria scene where they’re discussing his weight and he’s looking so embarrassed/distraught just plain sucked.
The weight on the shoulders of guys like Emitt to save 40 people from poverty is fricking unreal. To be that young and have everyone you care about say that you’re the only way out is so unfair.
It really depicts the struggle these kids go through so well. I could keep going. Also, Buckmaster is a boss.
Edit: the Malik story really pissed me off the most. That kid is extremely smart and talented. He could have been really damn good at whatever he decided to want to do (sports or not). Instead, he was forced to play a game he doesn’t even like and has to get his arse beat for it and pay for it later in life. His dad coming back into his life and taking advantage of him was fricking despicable.

I found myself, at times, wondering if even ingame situations were skewed/distorted to play into the story line. They definitely would preface something like Bobby being a dumbass or hothead through backstory and narrative, then show him being a dumbass. But it also wouldn't be that hard to edit together ingame situations (through fake announcer voice, showing a scoreboard from a different time, taking selective shots of coach screaming, etc..) to make someone's screwup look bigger than it was. So a kid actually get an offsides on a 1st and 10. But we're going to edit it so it looks like the kid jumped offsides on 4th and 2.
Brandon Bea is another one that I feel like this might have happened with. If he was as big of a screwup and screwed up in monumental situations like they showed in the game, I don't see how in the hell he'd have gotten picked up by Boise State.

Agreed. Malik was extremely smart. Hell, he's charismatic and likeable as well. When he was first talking to the camera in one of his interviews, his whole demeanor was likeable. Then when he started interacting with people on the football field, he became a totally different person.
He's clearly depressed and, as rumors indicate, abusing prescription meds to self-medicate. The dad (despite being a TPOS) even talks about what a bad place Malik was in after leaving Florida State and that maybe he shouldn't have sent him to ICC but he thought it was probably his last hope of him playing football and might be the thing to snap him out of it.

Yeah, Malik was the only person who I thought had no redeeming qualities. It just goes to show, you can have all the talent in the world and it doesn't matter if your attitude is not right. He was a bitch from Episode 1 on and really one of the only ones who didn't evolve as a player/person.
As far as JB goes, I thought he was a little over the top with his tough white guy from Compton bullshite, but I really found myself liking him pretty much the whole show and especially towards the end.
ETA: I think Boyd is gonna end up being something special.
