I feel pretty much the same way and I also watched in that order. Just got a much more genuine feel for Brown and would actually characterize him as a players coach. I consider it unfair to compare the 2 schools. The only comparisons I would make are the issues these kids have and develop, to me it's the most intriguing and most important aspect of the show.

Here is an interview with Henry on Whitlock's show.. LINK
Malik’s Dad is such garbage. Whitlock asks him if he’s a helicopter parent wanting his son to play more than Malik wants to play. His dad proceeds to defend himself by telling the story about him forcing Malik to go to IMG. And he irrelevantly throws in him being a black man

Thoughts on season 3.
--I wound up liking Brown more than Stephens. It always felt like Buddy was just using the players for his own glory. I think Brown cared more about the players and didn't see them only as a means to his own end.
That said, Brown's Plan A was to yell the F word and Plan B was to yell the F word more. It's no wonder his team self destructed regularly when he's flipping out all the time.
It was interesting how uncomfortable in his own skin he seemed. From constantly bragging to being so awkward in interviews and speeches, he never seemed to actually be himself.
--Malik Henry is an awful teammate. Melting down when things went bad, **** talking other players and coaches. The interviews with the wideouts was telling, where they pretty much said he was no leader and they didn't think he had their back.
--Most of the other players were fairly likeable but not memorable. Carlos Johnson and Emmit Gooden seemed to get it and be genuinely interested at getting something out of it. Rakeem too. It's sad Bobby Bruce got arrested. He was one of the easier people to root for.
--It was striking how much less institutional support Independence had vs EMCC. The coaches pretty much ran everything.
--Liked the teacher. You never know how much is for the cameras, but she went far above and beyond to try to inspire and motivate the kids. It has to be tough to work with kids who are struggling like that.
No issue with her discussing race. The book club book was Invisible Man, which forces you to discuss race issues. Plus, she's speaking to a class of most or (in the book club, all) black students. Trying to teach to something that provokes emotion, I just saw it as trying to make them care.
--The season 1 and 2 retrospective was really well done. It caught up with favorites like Ollie, Allen and the Kiffin crew, then handled the Isiah Wright situation really well. It would have been really easy to screw that up, but they were respectful to the victim, to Wright's familt and captured the humanity across the board.

You think a white woman could get away with telling her students how oppressed white people are how bad they've had it?
That would be a pretty dumb teacher if she did that. Can't compare the two.

Started watching season 3 and had a serious WTF moment when I realized that it’s filmed in the town I grew up in.

I finally got a chance and stomach to finish this series. I have read a lot of your discussion here and agree with most of it.
Personally, I do not believe Jason Brown should ever be allowed to coach kids at any age. He is just not the right guy to do so. His personality is not one to make kids better. His constant harassment of the kids, the other coaches, refs and opposing coaches is just horrible. He is not the example kids need and certainly not the kids he is getting. Plus, he really cant coach for shite. That team won games with talent. Not with coaching.
The teacher is doing nothing with the black kids there other than just stoking the fire. Instead of teaching them that everyone hates them and they are not as good as others, she needs to be teaching them academics. Maybe it is just editing on the show but she taught them nothing but racially motivated material.
Malik Henry is just a messed up kid. Not sure what will happen to him but he needs a leader in his life. Brown certainly is not one and his father is certainly not one. All he sees with his son is dollar signs. Brown had given up on him and that was evident when he basically got in a fish fight with him during a game.
I know its all about money but nobody should act like Brown is doing anything but pushing these kids through, maybe keeping them out of jail and in shape. Nothing else..
I played football all my youth life till the end of high school. I know how rough coaches can be. But his antics is something so far over the edge its pathetic. At some point, the way he carries himself just makes him look bad and ignorant. He is a terrible role model for kids that really need a solid role model in a coach.
