Kyle Newman was the director of the movie Fanboys, and he was on a podcast recently where he talked about the reaction to The Last Jedi. He claims that there are few people in the industry, both filmmakers and journalists, who actually liked Episode VIII, and that many of the good reviews delved out by critics were the result of wanting to maintain exclusive early access to Disney productions.

The YouTube channel "Geeks + Gamers" has the clip on his page which I will link down below:

I'm shocked, shocked I say, that any critic would do this. *delivered in complete deadpan*

Hell, the studios have been flying critics around the world to give them access to the sets during filming for decades. Not sure how the hell you give an unbiased critique after they sent you to New Zealand to see the actual hobbits.

This was obvious to me the moment I saw the movie.

Hell, they had an entire episode of Entourage about this very practice like 10 years ago. This is nothing new.

I don’t get why people give critics any second’s thought. If you need the opinion of a professional to decide whether or not you like a movie, you’ve got far deeper issues to deal with

Same reason why Baton Rouge sports media refuses to criticize Ed Orgeron.

You losers are still bitching about that movie?

Christ.

I'm sorry your snowflake sensibilities were offended that Luke Skywalker didn't turn out like how you thought he would. Ever thought that maybe talented guy who got handed the keys to a gigantic franchise had better ideas than you did?

Yea, and then we watched episode 8 and saw how much of a colossal turd it was. And Luke had 1/87th to do with it.

Not after watching it, no. Next question.

HA. HA. HA. My crackpot theory about Marvel getting positive reviews from critics over DC/Sony/Fox films despite the disparity in fan rating isn’t so dumb after all now is it?

A much better Star Wars movie than TLJ.

Just wondering why he didn’t use any of those good ideas you think he had.

What ideas would those be? The purple haired feminist propaganda and pointless jaunt to save some animals from the evil white war rocketeers by irrelevant characters?

You either never watched the movie or you're Rian Johnson himself.

This doesn’t make sense since they didn’t need to do this for a movie that was already going to make a ton of money with a huge opening weekend with already huge presold tickets before any word of mouth would occur.

In addition, if they did it for TLJ then they had even more reason to do it for Solo because after the backlash, a 70% rating on rottentomatoes, which many probably thought was already inflated anyways, wasn’t going to help entice anyone on the fence. Why would they suddenly not do the same thing, especially since it was a better movie anyways.

And there have been 80 reviews posted starting in January of this year, weeks after the release and mostly from the more obscure on-line critics who probably don’t have any exclusive access. Those 90% of those 80 reviews were fresh scores.

And besides, the things that drew criticisms from the fans (debunking theories; how they handled Luke’s storyline) and the things that drew praise from the critics (social themes; female driven), make the discrepancy in their views unsurprising.

In other words, many critics probably don’t care as much about the things fans were critical as they don’t care as much about the universe. On the other hand, the fans don’t care as much about themes and commentary that the critics enjoyed.

Nope it’s extremely dumb.

Across the 20 films in the MCU, the average tomatometer critic score is 84.05% and the average fan score is 83.25%.

Even the most recent 10 films starting in 2015 has an average critic score of 87.3% and a fan score 85.4%.

Your theory wouldn’t even make it into infowars.
