Smith almost died a few months ago so I’m sure a lot of things bring him to tears. Especially the “ending” to the Star Wars characters who molded his childhood so much.

Abrams is pretty solid, as long as he's involved with it I will be more likely to buy a ticket.
Even if I had ridden to the theater with someone else and had sneaked into the theater without paying for any ticket, I would still have felt like I was robbed after watching TLJ.

It might be that he was brought to tears thinking of what he could have done had he been given creative control of the Star Wars movies.
Don't get me wrong, Smith has laid his share of eggs, but he would have knocked Star Wars movies out the park. He's done a fantastic job as director on CW DC shows. For him, facing his own mortality, to see what others have done to a series he could have made the measuring stick of a modern space opera series... yeah. He probably cried.

I really, really hope this movie bombs like Solo. I think if they get two flops in a row they may get the message. At the least, they don’t get rewarded for their sins.

Smith cried because he saw how much SJW tripe was embedded in the movie and he thought it was beautiful.
