The director recently spoke about visiting the set of the movie currently in production and while he, of course, couldn't go into specifics, Smith told GMA Day that seeing the movie in production, and one performance in particular, brought him to tears. According to Smith...

"J.J.'s doing the lord's work. This movie looks fantastic. It's a year away, but man, it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I've seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I've ever seen in my life. The dude's not directing a movie. It's like he's directing a small country."

Smith was then asked if the incredible things he saw had something to do with the events of The Last Jedi, and in an answer that may prove reassuring to the detractors of Rian Johnson’s flick, he said that the moments he witnessed were connected to the saga in general rather than Episode IX’s immediate predecessor:

“It had nothin’ to do with Last Jedi. The things I saw, that blew my mind are on a Star Wars-level. All universe, all flicks. There were some details I heard that *gasps* since they’re wrapping this up with nine.”

I’ve never been a big enough SW fan to hate all of them.

What does this even mean? You watched a movie for 2 hours and didn't have an opinion on it? Are you r-worded?

Same here. I’ve seen every one at the theater since the original. Enjoyed them all. Recently watched The Last Jedi and enjoyed it even more than the first time. I’m a fan but not a fanboy - I’m so glad I’m not wrapped up in them enough to lose my shite over every small detail I dislike.

So? He wept on his Avengers Endgame trailer reaction video too. I think he weeps a lot now. PTSD.

Star Wars is prime example of why you don’t let feminist women run anything. Particularly a multiple billion dollar property created and honed by men.

Kevin Smith thought Phantom Menace was a masterpiece. I like his movies but he's a classic fanboy that can see no wrong with Star Wars. Plus, obviously he's friends with JJ so it's not like he's gonna shite on the guy's movie.
