Kevin Smith: I'm Tired of People Overreacting to The Last Jedi

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has been in theaters for exactly one month as of January 15, but you’d be forgiven for thinking it has been much longer since the polarizing reaction was so deafening in the weeks that followed. Filmmaker and outspoken “Star Wars” fanatic Kevin Smith has finally gotten around to addressing the backlash on his “Fatman On Batman” podcast, and he calls the response “vitriolic.”
“Some people, it hit them the wrong way in a big way,” Smith says. “I’ve seen, it’s not just people going like, ‘Oh, I didn’t like it,’ when they don’t like it. It’s vitriolic, as if somebody fricked up their childhood.”
For Smith, audience expectation played directly into the backlash surrounding the film. He says many fans expected “The Last Jedi” to be heavily focused on Luke Skywalker following the cliffhanger at the end of “The Force Awakens.” Even the trailers suggested Luke playing a much more prominent role and becoming an Obi-Wan figure to Rey. While Rian Johnson’s script did turn Luke into a mentor of sorts, he was hardly the film’s central figure. The character’s curmudgeon attitude also drew complaints from fans.
“I think at the end of the day, audience expectation plays into [the backlash],” Smith explains. “Like when, you know, you’re like, ‘Alright the next movie is going to be all about Luke and I’ve seen Luke in the trailer and I know exactly who Luke Skywalker is and now he looks like Obi-Wan so he’s going to be like this version of Obi-Wan,’ and then they give you a version of Luke that even Mark Hamill reportedly was like ‘I don’t know, is this really supposed to be Luke Skywalker? He’s not the one I remember.’”
Smith explains that “The Force Awakens” was the easier movie to like because it provided the “nostalgia rush” of being back in the “Star Wars” universe. The movie also “didn’t have a trace of Jar Jar in it,” which made it that much stronger.

Kevin Smith is full of hot air.
He is infected with the SJW bug.

He's forgotten more about movies than we'll ever know

We’re talking about Kevin Smith, not Ingmar Bergman.

Well, yeah. Because completely altering Luke's character attaches that timeline to the one we knew and cherished.
I will forever watch ROTJ only to think about Luke drinking milk and dickhead tossing a light saber 30 years later.

I think some people thought that, but I didn't. I never once thought The Last Jedi would focus on Luke. I thought he'd have a very similar role to the one he had - mentor, sage, master Jedi. But ultimately, the movie was about Rey.
Our complaints are that Luke sucked, the plot sucked, Snoke died a pointless death with no reason for existing in the first place, and the spotlight left Rey far too many times.
Kylo Ren's the only redeeming part of the series right now, and he's not even that great with his whiney temper tantrums.

Well, Smith, the latest movie had Porgs and Melissa or whatever the frick that Asian girl's name was. And while TFA was a big breath of nostalgia, it still had some new things introduced that simply weren't developed in TLJ.

Well duh...
If you like Star Wars the originals, do you want to see them fricked over like Indiana, Ghostbusters, etc.

Mary Poppins Leia is worse than Jar Jar.

I could go on through the rest of your post but what’s the point?
Smith is 100% right.

TFA was milquetoast and TLJ was shite.

what does this even mean? does that make his opinions on movies better than anyone else. You either like a movie or you don't. You don't have to be a movie historian to enjoy it.
The movie sucked, and i would never listen to the opinion of any moron over the age of 30 ever again that tries to say that was a good movie.

I’m 37 and I enjoyed it

They made a bad movie. It could have mediocre and not shite all over the OT. Or it could have been amazing and different. But it wasn't and it offended the sense of continuity and nostalgia that people who love a fantasy franchise pay expecting to see.
Both the box office reception and the nerd rage that have followed are completely predictable.

So true. Nerds spent years reading dumbass Snoke and Rey's parents fan theories and they didn't get what they wanted.

Then who was? Rey is barely present for the final act. Kylo Ren is only there in Rey’s visions for the second act. Finn, Poe, and Rose’s arc is ultimately pointless. It’s just a fricking mess.

Yeah, you can say that. There’s no way JJ thought that Luke’s next action was going to be to throw the lightsaber over his shoulder.

Ummmm, no. You can say that about people like Tarantino or Edgar Wright, but not Kevin Smith.
