Did it ever mention Jerry Jeff?

They mentioned in the context of acts that played at the Armadillo World Headquarters. That was the only time I heard his name. Same with Asleep at the Wheel.

Yeah then they were like oh by the way, he had 60 #1’s, but we’re going to spend twice as much time on Kathy goddamn Matea.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing. I mean, they spent more time on her than even more famous female artists (Reba).

Ray Benson did get a lot of screen time, though.

Would be awesome if Burns did a southern rock doc as well. Really enjoyed episodes 5, 6, and 7

One more episode to go for me, and I have to say, I think Hazel Smith is to "Country Music" what Shelby Foote was to "The Civil War".

I always get a kick out of what that old lady has to say. She is a hoot.

You should make a point of finding episodes of his weekly program on RFD-TV.

He does it just like Porter Waggoner used to and features the artists from the whole gamut.

Here's a show from YouTube that features Johnny Rivers. Great music television.

Anyone who isn't aware that Roseanne Cash is the real deal needs to pick up a copy of her award-winning album "The River and the Thread" from five years ago. If you like music rising from the New Orleans to Memphis stretch of the Big River, you'll like it. It's flawless.

Great episode tonight. I only cried twice, Where Have You Been and when Johnny died.

I first heard that song when Kathy Mattea recorded it and I was down in my man cave tossing some darts. I had to stop playing and just felt this overwhelming sadness as the song progressed-----but in a good way if you know what I mean. I listened to it several times, it was that powerful.

My wife and I were sitting on the couch and watching that episode when they touched on how the "Bluebird Café" would host open mike night and this young guy comes in and sings it and not a dry eye was to be had when he finished------then they shoot off to Mattea singing it and I could hear my wife sobbing and it once again brought a tear to my eye. What a beautiful song about the love the old couple shared.

Her telling about coming into her office, finding passed out artists sleeping in it, and running them out was great. You're right, she did add to the series.

Man I loved just hearing Shelby Foote speak.

just watched episode 8 last night finally. Man what a good documentary. Dust bowl, baseball, civil war, and the west are all hard to beat as far as saying this was his best one but it is for sure right there with them if not the best one. Gonna watch the concert tonight. There was certainly some things I wish would have spent more time on like George Strait etc and others werent mentioned at all that maybe could have been but there was no way everyone/thing could be included even with 16 hours. never been a big vince gill fan at all but most def am a george jones fan and the clip of Gill singing at George Jones memorial made me go find the whole thing and watch that too and man just wow.

I've seen that clip quite a few times. Patty Loveless really helped Vince get through that song.

Vince Gill probably had the best voice country music has ever heard. And he never had to tell people he was singing country music. Or sing anything about a stupid dirt road.

Is he as nice as he comes across in this doc? He just seems like a nice guy without a mean bone in his body.

Oh wow. His one of the few I really don't like. It wasn't bad in the Nitty Gritty days, but in his solo career, something changed.
