Yeah then they were like oh by the way, he had 60 #1’s, but we’re going to spend twice as much time on Kathy goddamn Matea.

The Garth piece is what i’d been waiting for.. it finally transported me back to that time like to some of you older baws, the Johnny cash/Merle pieces have done for you.

I believe Garth was my first concert I ever went to in Memphis at the pyramid in the mid 90’s and I wore a black cowboy hat as a 6-7 year old kid and it was amazing.

6 years old, huh. Garth for me was drinking beer and everybody getting in a circle in the middle of the room in a huddle and belting out Friends in Low Places. Different experiences but all great memories.

Emmylou Harris. I’ve been in love with that woman for decades. The times I’ve seen her live have been transcendent.

Saw her once at Willie’s 4th of July in Luckenbach. I didn’t really know who she was but a friend was all excited so I paid attention. Been a fan and learned more about her since.

I’m absolutely loving this documentary even though i’ve Never been a big fan of country music. Just a passing fan from time to time.

So, imagine my surprise when Doyle from the movie Sling Blade is one of the featured artists!

Mad respect! I just never knew that the actor in that movie and the country music star were one and the same!

Yoakam playing the part of a really bad wannabe musician is extra awesome!

One of my only complaints is no mention of the Band. I mean few bands ever captured America and Country as well as they did. Even if all the members were from Canada except Levon Helm

That version of Will the Circle be Unbroken that closed the last episode had Levon Helm on vocals for the next to last verse and a lot of the end chorus. That was from Will the Circle be Unbroken Volume II.

Also I don't really think The Band fits as country music. They may have been influenced by country music but that wasn't what they were playing. And if you are going to start including bands like that you are going to need another two hour episode featuring the Rolling Stones, Jason and the Scorchers, Lone Justice, The Eagles, Poco, John Cougar Melloncamp, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Pure Prairie League, Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, and practically every Southern Rock band that ever recorded an album.

Speaking of that, I'm a little surprised they didn't explore that Southern Rick offshoot a little bit. Lynyrd Skynryd, CDB, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, etc. Just a tad off course but it would have fit.

While The Band and Credence took their influences from the Delta Blues and Folk-Country, they weren't country. You could pick Levon Helm out of there and put him in Nashville, but the rest were just amazing musicians pulling from Americana in an attempt to be as authentic as Helm.

I've had a similar thought in each episode.

Sorta related. Was/is Marty Stuart really that important? He's in ever damn episode multiple times.

He's only ever had two jobs!!! Pretty dang cool jobs to have.

Also, how old was this actually? They had a lot of Merle interviews. And he's been dead for what... 3 years? I'm assuming those were done for the documentary and not just interview footage.

Had the same thought when they showed Guy Clark. Dude's been dead since 2016.
