probably been 20 yrs since I'd last seen it, at least. Hell, maybe 30 or more. The CGI is VERY dated and primitive, but the movie holds up surprisingly well for all that.
The story is still entertaining, and as I mentioned to my son, recruiting via a video game no longer seems that outrageous, not like back when this came out.
Oh, and yeah- I forgot how much I had the hots for Catherine Mary Stewart as a kid!
Regarding the special effects- this one is almost all CGI, but that's both bad and good for this time period (mid 80s). The bad is that it doesn't match up to Star Wars visually, since they used models instead. But the good is that compared to a lot of other such films, there is an attempt to depict things on a fairly decent visual point of view... most films and TV shows of that time period just show generic images of the spacecraft, while this one tries to show formations and whatnot. In the Death Blossom scene, they do try to give an indication of the Gunstar spinning around shooting everything... Star Wars had surpassed that with ESB, but not the original, and this was WAY less budgeted than Lucas' films.
Just an observation, we see that nowadays, but this was one of the first to do that.
Part of me would like a remake to see the effects do the story justice, but another part wants Hollywood to stay away from this, as it was such an innocent and fun movie that likely would be commercialized and soulless if remade.
Anyone else still like this flick?

One of my all time favorite movies.

I remember this was one of those movies that I by random watched when I was staying up way past my bed time as a kid. I think I caught it on the disney channel, if that's plausible. I remember really liking it, but it has been probably like 20 years since I have seen it too.

The score in this movie is pretty great. I also love the last exchange of the enemy commanders, as cheesy as it is with that eyepiece swinging into place.
"What do we do?"
"We die."

Def one of my favs from early 80s sci-fi. The idea of advanced alien races in a galactic war dropping arcade games on planets to judge potential was nice - late-70s, 80s arcades.
Plus I'm a sucker for an 80s brunette with feathered hair.

Always been a dream of mine to join The Star League and ride in the backseat of that car with Centauri.

Very undrrated and not well known 80s movie!
I used to watch it all the time on Showtime when it first hit the movie channels.

When it came out, we were actually really excited about it because it used computer generated effects. We thought it was the future. Believe it or not, we understood that the tech was not where it would be one day, even as we saw it in the theater.
The movie is so appealing because it plays to so many historically-proven themes: stranger in a strange land, last hope vs. overwhelming odds, boy loses girl - gets girl, boy ascends to man/family leader through rite of passage. The story is actually can't-miss, if you think about it.
It was a great movie from a fun and mostly optimistic period of time. A neat little time capsule.

One of my all time favorites. "Greetings, Starfighter! You have been chosen by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada..."
On a related note, the book Armada by Ernest Cline (the guy who wrote Ready Player One, which is about to become a Spielberg flick next spring) was essentially a rip-off of The Last Starfighter. RPO was outstanding, and in the right hands should be a great movie. Armada was an homage to TLS, at best.

I love this movie....watched it not too long ago with my kids. They said I overhyped it to them beforehand so they didn't like it as much as I did when I was a kid.

This is a somewhat overlooked movie of 1984 (such a great year for movies). I love this movie. I used to wish they would make a sequel back in the 90's/early 2000's, but I changed my mind after seeing all of the other attempts to cash in on old franchises in the past few years.

The movie holds up due to the performances and good old fashioned storytelling. You can look past dated effects if the story is good enough.
They do a good job making that trailer park seem like it was inhabited by real people. It's a fun movie, though clearly a Star Wars rip off.

I loved the idea of an Omni-directional chair with a HUD for the gunner. I could just see myself as a kid blowing through some warships.
And Death Blossom was a mother!

I've always wanted to fight a desperate battle against incredible odds.
