That is a bit of a stretch.

Honestly, I don’t get the hate either. Looks like a loose adaptation of one of the greatest Joker stories ever told: The Killing Joke

Thought it looked great and nobody can deny that Phoenix has the chops to kill this part.

If by "loose adaptation" you mean completely different, then sure.

Well, he looks to at least try his hand at comedy and he is with a woman at a diner. He has a wife and is a comic in Killing Joke so it isn't completely different.

Looked like he’s a failed comedian that has a love interest and he slowly fails into madness (which isn’t a part of the one bad day concept the Joker has in Killing Joke) but the concept is there in spirit.

He’s got one of the best Joker laughs already, just from the trailer. I was pretty skeptic until I saw the trailer and I was blown away. What did people expect? That this was going to be a hard comics take on the Joker with surprise cameo appearances from Batman, Gordon and Harley and for him to get doused in a vat of chemicals?

but it is a sham they are making "society" create the joker.

Make Joaquin Phoenix say "We live in a society" in the new Joker film

This movie looks like it's going to attempt to give me more insight and back story on the Joker than I really want.

This. It's unnecessary.

Phoenix will kill it for sure sure, but it's a pointless movie that goes against the character a bit.

Don't need to know how some bullies pushed him over the edge. Although that trailer may be misleading.

every movie is unnecessary

if the story is interesting the performances are good, who cares really?

if it's a one-off, i don't think it's pointless. you have to just keep it within the film itself and it's fine

I can see that and partly the reason why I was skeptical going into the trailer. But I’m sold on it. I hope Phoenix is the Joker going forward

I tend to agree. Say what you want about Hamill, Nicholson, Phoenix, being closer to the comics, etc., Ledger’s Joker is just special. Now Phoenix may very well do a great job, but for me, Ledger’s Joker is the GOAT on screen villain.

Agreed. Calling a movie unnecessary feels like lazy criticism to me.

People mean having the back story of the Joker.

The bottom line is that in any movie we never see “our” personal interpretation of the Joker or any other character. We are going to see Todd Phillips’ and Joachim Phoenix’s interpretation. That’s all. Our personal interpretations... the Jokers in our minds... are all still valid. This is not a zero sum situation. I’m eager to see this take on the character.

I disagree a little here.

There's a difference between
quote:

interpretation
and rebuilding.

An interpretation would be another take on the the core of the character, one whose origin is fluid, who's foil is Batman, etc. Interpretations generally mean the important parts of the subject are the same, but the trappings, the results, the execution is different.

This is a completely different character.

I thought the trailer was trash. I’ll still go see it but meh. Big fan of Joaquin too.

I'm convinced one of the reasons Marvel chose Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange was to keep DC from hiring him to play the Joker in a bad-arse Killing Joke movie.

Thank God for us dodging that imaginary bullet. People bitch about DC movies being too dark. The world would stop spinning if they put out a live action Killing Joke with Barbara raped and crippled and the footage shown to her father during his own torture session. Plus Dr. Strange showed that Cumberbatch's acting range has limits.

I don't mean as a film, as a backstory.

I'd return the question with:

If the performances are good, and the movie is good, why does it have to be "The Joker," and why can't it be some other character?
