Since Lithgow isn’t traditionally British, this might open the casting up to just include the best actors they can instead of only including actors in the UK

Careful. We'll end up with Keanu Reeves as Snape.

If they really wanted to go with the book description of Snape, they'd get Adrien Brody.

Age concerns aside, I love this. Lithgow has the range to properly play Dumbledore. Instead of a doddering old man, like Richard Harris did. Or a mean old man, like Michael Gambon.

I always get a chuckle out of this. I realize Dumbledore was distant towards Harry in books 5-6, but Gambon portrayed him as a complete a-hole all of the time.

No difference here.

If you don't see the difference between the Harry Potter Books and "Fire & Blood" adaptation wise, I don't know what to tell you.

We are talking 7 self-contained books with traditional plots following a pretty specific formula...that have already been adapted to film, with 1 main hero character and two other "main characters" right below Harry.

Vs.

1 book that is 700 pages that is a history book with a bunch of different stories about this particular time period...with a 2nd volume planned that hasn't been written, with a bunch of characters, no real heros, characters die, and grow up and move back and forth.

There are vast differences in how to adapt both of those.

In 6? They were alone together for half of the book starting from the trip to pick up Slughorn.

Gambon lost me at the beginning of GoF when he was screaming bloody murder at Harry for putting his name in. Book Dumbledore knew immediately it wasn’t him.

I don't like Gambon's Dumbledore at all. There was essentially zero warmth or playfulness to it.

Been a while since I read the books, but I thought Dumbledore pretty much shunned Harry once they got to Hogwarts after this, except for the couple of times they met re: the Pensieve lessons. I may be misremembering though. I haven't read HBP since just before Deathly Hallows came out.

The memes from this will always get me.

It was book 5 where Dumbledore was distant to Harry. In Book 6 he was giving him private lessons, they were together for most of the book

Book Dumbledore could be very playful, almost a childlike caring quality at times. He had a twinkle in his eye.

Gambon played Dumbledore VERY seriously with rarely ever a smile or warmth in his voice.

EXCLUSIVE: HBO is closing in on two more main cast members for its high-profile series adaptation of the hugely popular Harry Potter fantasy books. Oscar and Emmy-nominated actress Janet McTeer is in negotiations to play Professor Minerva McGonagall, sources tell Deadline. Additionally, Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu, one of the first actors identified for the series, is closing his deal to portray Professor Severus Snape, I hear. They are poised to join John Lithgow, who, as Deadline reported exclusively, will be playing Professor Albus Dumbledore.

HBO declined to comment. “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation,” the network said in a statement. “As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

Oh, sorry, I thought the whole point of the series was to create a more authentic and closer to the books adaptation

I will say this about Snape being black: going to make James Potter look even worse than he does.

I think Rowling always did James dirty, and people are way to sympathetic to Snape, who is a dick and former wizard nazi.

But James always comes across as an a-hole who was mean to poor Snapes and they don’t really go into why Lil, and Remus and Sirius were insanely loyal to him and loved him.

Making Snapes black is just gonna make James look racist AF

Yay, looking forward to the sympathy for the bad guy because of racism story line. That's a fun one.
