ETA: Here's the full interview with GQ

quote:

He is on a breathless roll now, breaking his long corporate omerta to touch on the unthinking, systemic mistreatment of black characters in blockbusters (“They’re always scared. They’re always fricking sweating”) and what he sees as the relative salvage job that returnee director JJ Abrams performed on The Rise Of Skywalker (“Everybody needs to leave my boy alone. He wasn’t even supposed to come back and try to save your shite”). Even though he also acknowledges that it was an “amazing opportunity” and a “stepping stone” that has precipitated so much good in his life and career, he is palpably exhilarated to be finally saying all this. But to dismiss these words as merely professional bitterness or paranoia is to miss the point.

quote:

John Boyega has expressed his frustration at being “pushed to the side” in the sequels to his Star Wars debut The Force Awakens, saying that Disney gave “all the nuance” to Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley’s white characters in the later films.

In a candid interview with GQ, Boyega also suggests his fellowed diverse major cast members, including Naomi Ackie, Kelly Marie Tran and Oscar Isaac, were all victims of similar fates.

“You get yourself involved in projects and you’re not necessarily going to like everything. [But] what I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up,” commented Boyega.

quote:

"You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know frick all,” he continued. “So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience.”

He added that some of the film’s white cast members did not suffer the same outcomes, “They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”

In the interview, Boyega also expressed his frustration with how his casting and performances in the franchise were often perceived through the prism of his race.

I was pretty on board with him being the star from the beginning of TFA. I was pretty surprised when daisy Ridley pushed him aside at the end.

ETA: did Leia, Han, Lando and Chewy get as much nuance as Luke and Darth Vader?

Eta2: Complaining about giving Adam driver nuance is dumb. All great epic stories need a complex and entertaining villain plus Adam driver is probably one of the best true actors alongside Alec Guiness to appear in Star Wars. Of course they’re going to give him a lot of material.

that idiot should be mad what they did to his character.... but it wasnt because of Daisy or Adam. They fricked it up because they wanted to prop up Rose and Holdo.

He can rest all of the blame solely on Rian SJW Johnson. Rian was so forward thinking that he took all of his minority characters, advertised them big time, then turned them into caricatures and sent them on a worthless, social justice laden, detour to nowhere

He should be frustrated. A stormtrooper that breaks his conditioning and defects has the potential to be a very compelling character. But that backstory amounted to not much more than "I'm afraid of the First Order."

What did he think was going to happen? You already knew from the first movie that Kylo Ren was a Skywalker and was setup as the main villain and that Rey had untapped force powers. Who did he think were going to be the biggest focus in the other 2 movies?

He went from unknown actor to household name thanks to being cast in a prominent Star Wars role and now he's probably committing career suicide by accusing the studio who gave him his big break of being racist because his character didn't get as much screen time as he wanted.

How much of a role does he really think a character is supposed to have when they don't even make their first appearance until halfway through the 3rd film of a trilogy? Rose was just poorly written from the beginning (thanks Rian). Poe was pretty heavily featured in all of the movies...so idk what Boyega's gripe is

Finn was wasted even though he had so much potential after TFA. Johnson can be blamed for making his character lame and leaving Abrams with nothing to work with.

Rey wasn't nuanced at all and that was a big criticism of the trilogy. Then they had to backload the character is TROS.

Kylo was the best written character and the best part of the trilogy. He had to be nuanced since he was the extension of Darth Vader, one of the GOAT characters.

Rose is on the list for WOAT characters in all of movies so they minimized her.

A lot of Boyega's criticism can be chalked up to a disjointed storyline and the adjustments that had to be made to make it coherent.

Plus, the Chinese are pretty racist and Disney wanted that China money, so they even minimized him on the poster.

Because they were terribly written characters who made dumb decisions or said stupid shite at the wrong time.

He should blame the writers.

Right. His character was actually kinda fricked up BECAUSE of diversity and them wanting to push minority characters just for the sake of doing it (rather than story). So if anything, his criticism is wrong, on top of being stupid.

And also, you know, it would've been helpful to maybe point that out at the time instead of years later. Or were you okay with it while you were getting those paychecks and fame, but now that it's run its course (for the most part) you want to "speak up" because of the bullshite society that we live in now and get your little piece of the sympathy pie?

Get the frick out of here, Boyega.

So he makes it about race. Disney makes it about race. Journalists make it about race. They’re all guilty.

Disney really did his and Poe’s characters dirty in episodes 8 and 9. Poe was little more than a generic pilot. Finn had the potential to be the most interesting character and they did almost nothing with him.
