How do you study for this? Do they give you categories to go by? There's no way people no that much about 16th Century ballet or Botswainie Folk dancing.
The show does not provide any study advice. After all that preliminary testing, these people actually do have extraordinary breadth of knowledge and very fast recall. Just getting selected is an honor.

Yes they do. People on Jeopardy are insanely knowledgeable about many different subjects.
But anyone can study for the show, it just takes time and work. There are all kinds of online resources that can help.

what is the point of this? If you ace the others but are dull and boring they won't invite you?
Pretty much. They don’t want people on the show who are grumpy buttholes, no matter how much they know. It makes for bad TV.

James said he studied books in the children's section because it made subjects "interesting"
quote:
I have a strategy of reading children’s books to gain knowledge. I’ve found that in an adult reference book, if it’s not a subject I’m interested in, I just can’t get into it.
I was thinking, what is the place in the library I can go to to get books tailored to make things interesting for uninterested readers? Boom. The children’s section.

Sure but it doesn't mean they'll maintain or grasp the subject nor does mean they won't panic once the lights come on.

What would you suggest if I made it that far?
When you confirm that you will attend the audition, they send you a bunch of paperwork to fill out in advance and send in. One of the things is 5 or so topics for your Trebek interview. That's one if the things contestant coordinators ask you about (in front of the other candidates) at the audition. They keep them in your file for when/if you get the call. So you will have time to recollect some funny stories and such.
One of mine was how I first met my wife at a new wave concert on a New Orleans riverboat. Another was my wacky way of tailgating (which had already been on Uni-Watch on ESPN.com). Right before taping, the contest coordinators and I agreed we'd go with the wife-meet story.
What I didn't know is that Trebek can make an impromptu "executive decision", AND HE DID. I was all ready to talk about meeting my wife, and Trebek says, "So, Bruce, I hear you have an interesting approach to tailgating at your alma mater.." I switched gears real quick and was able to answer him in a decent fashion. Trebek even set me up for a humorous response and I got a good chuckle out of the audience.

"no" that much???
They don't give you the categories, you just have to have a wide range of knowledge, be well read, and most importantly, have excellent/instant recall (I've always had that last trait since I was a kid).
Like Holzhauer and many other contestants, I DID brush up a bit on some common Jeopardy! subjects where I figured I might be a little weak or rusty-- Shakespeare, in particular.

not really responding to you, just the last comment in the thread...
what a lot of people dont realize is that jeopardy is a game of breadth, not depth.
there are countless times where someone might say "how did you know that?!?!?" and almost always, it's just that it was the only possible answer and quite often literally the only factoid one may know on that topic.
ever notice that the sports categories are incredibly easy? in actuality, every category is like that. it's just that you know the 10 most common "MLB Stadiums" clues but not the 10 most common "Opera" clues.
obviously the best players, like james, have ridiculous breadth and depth.

First 5 minutes of Thursday's episodes demonstrates the brilliance of James' strategy (hesitant to call it his). Every answer in the category should have contained the word "out" (as Trebek explained), but because James chose the $1000 clue right off the bat a contestant didn't fully realize the rule and gave an answer that didn't have "out", costing him $1k and making him look like an idiot.
This guy uploads episodes pretty early in the day if you're struggling to find a place to watch. PB also has them with subs.

Thanks for the link. Works great. That gal from Lafayette played tough yesterday. Didn’t beat James but went into final jeopardy with almost $10k, without having hit a Daily Double. If Holzhauer hadn’t been the returning champ, she might have won.

Did you see how many times she tried to buzz in but was a tick behind James? Pretty funny but felt sorry for her because she was visably frustrated...she was MASHING that button.

Which brings up another topic, the button. With every episode James becomes more accustomed to the buzzer game, which is half the battle in Jeopardy. Gotta wonder if production offers more practice time to other contestants to combat this.

BRich, how do you know the buzzers are open. I had some Jeopardy! games for the computer and they would have 3 lights at the bottom of the board that would light up. I would practice hitting the spacebar perfectly to ring in ASAP.
Is the game like this in real life or do you have to just time it for when Alex stops talking?
