I’ve never been on the show (despite my best efforts), but I know a bunch of people who have. They tell me that the contestant’s panel lights up when Trebek stops talking, indicating that it’s okay to buzz.
You really can’t wait for the panel to light up though. The trick is to anticipate the exact moment the panel will light and to push the button the instant before it does so.

BRich, how do you know the buzzers are open. I had some Jeopardy! games for the computer and they would have 3 lights at the bottom of the board that would light up. I would practice hitting the spacebar perfectly to ring in ASAP.
Is the game like this in real life or do you have to just time it for when Alex stops talking?
It's pretty much like your game. While there is an actual board, there is also a large screen where each "answer" or clue is displayed. That screen is surrounded by little light bulbs, like a backstage dressing room mirror. A staffer pushes a button when Trebek finishes, which both opens the buzzer and switches on the lights.
Like you said with your computer game, it's all about timing. Some champs (like Holzhauser) have said they focus on the lights, others on timing or anticipating after Trebek finishes. That was the hardest thing to get the knack of when I played, and from what I've heard from other former contestants, it's the same.
Plus, the system is calibrated to something like a hundredth of a second, and if you buzz in 1/100th of a second early, you are "locked out" for 1/4 second. That's an eternity in buzzer time.

Great interview on SVP
gives some insight into his preparations
also he is wearing a Japan World Cup jersey and if you look at his face closely he does appear he might have some Asian heritage.

On the April 17 episode Holzhauer dedicated his win to his late grandmother, whom he described as Japanese with a very limited command of English and whom he said he had promised he would appear on Jeopardy! someday.[

Good stuff. Thanks for the first hand input.
I just keep the remote control in my hand and press it like a buzzer when I watch. I figure that's the best I can do now along with playing a lot of Sporcle.

Both contestants last night held the buzzer up and close to their chest.I rarely if ever see James holding up the buzzer.

Today he was off his game.
He didn’t hit the daily doubles today like he normally does.
And Robin was holding the buzzer the entire game like it was black penis she was about to start blowing at any moment

I really wish he was a more likeable guy

The contestants today were literally awful. They just got lucky and grabbed all the DDs (and proceeded to miss them).

I actually think he is becoming more likable as time goes on.

I sort of agree, it was hard to watch him the first few episodes

How is he so quick on the draw? He has the button technique down pat.

Some better contestants might have made this a better game. Old buddy couldn't get his caviar daily double.

Chicago Tribune article from today:
James Holzhauer is on track to surpass 'Jeopardy!' legend Ken Jennings in half the time: 'He has no weak point'
James Holzhauer is on track to surpass 'Jeopardy!' legend Ken Jennings in half the time: 'He has no weak point'
quote:
Like Ken Jennings did 15 years ago, James Holzhauer is changing the way the quiz show “Jeopardy!” is played, an expert observer of the game says.
For people like Andy Saunders, who runs “The Jeopardy! Fan” website, the comparisons are obvious between the Naperville native and “Jeopardy!” champion Jennings, who holds the record for most consecutive wins — 74 — and most money won in regular play, $2,520,700.
quote:
Since Holzhauer started his winning streak — 17 as of Friday, with winnings totaling nearly $1.3 million - Saunders said calculating statistics on how Holzhauer stacks up against Jennings from the daily half-hour game show takes between 60 and 90 minutes.
On a typical day pre-Holzhauer, Saunders would need 30 minutes to compile results.
quote:
According to The Jeopardy Fan, Holzhauer — as Jennings did before him — is quick on the trigger. He’s able to buzz in first 57% of the time, leaving the other two contestants to fight for the remaining 43%.
The website shows Holzhauer is correct 97% of the time he buzzes in first, and he’s right 93% of the time on Daily Double responses.
quote:
“He’s good at absolutely everything. He has no weak point,” Saunders said.
quote:
Watching the show for years, Saunders said typical players don’t bet $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000, Saunders said. “For most average contestants, $20,000 is half or a third of a year’s salary. It makes them nervous,” he said.
For a gambler who knows the odds stack in his favor, “when you’re offered even money on a Daily Double, you want to bet as much as possible,” Saunders said.
quote:
The Jeopardy Fan reports Holzhauer had 34 correct and two incorrect responses in that game and was first on the buzzer 60% of the time. Holzhauer went into Final Jeopardy with $29,600, wagering $20,000

what a lot of people dont realize is that jeopardy is a game of breadth, not depth.
This is accurate.
I mentioned this on another board, but i’ve always been decent at trivia, i once tried out for Jeopardy but i just missed the cut, this was before people applied via the internet; the internet was a thing, but you had to try out in person.. i always say that my knowledge base is a half-inch deep, but a mile wide; i.e. i know a little bit about a lot of stuff... this guy James, he knows a *lot*, about a *lot* of stuff.. that’s a really rare combo, and so far unbeatable.

Thanks for bailing this week out James.

Wasn't a runaway today and the runner up finished with over 50k.
I don't get why people are saying he can't be beat. That's bs. If he goes against another good player like today and he can't find the daily doubles, he can absolutely be beat. He only found one of them in double jeopardy today and the game was close as a result.
