It’s not a true comedy, but I get why it’s classified that way.

I think the larger discussion at this point is what is comedy and what is drama in modern TV. We’ve foregone things like laugh tracks and overt comedic performances for more subtle comedic performances.

Fargo is probably another good example of the grey area.

Probably not.

Everyone told me to watch it.

Watched the first 2 episodes then bailed. Characters are all annoying and unsympathetic.

I've worked in the a restaurant, and I couldn't make it past the first episode. Show gave me anxiety. Wasn't particular enjoyable to me.

The most overrated show on TV. Unlikable people screaming at each other the entire time.

found the characters annoying at first but it was done with a purpose and the payoffs are wonderful
this is why I asked. I was wondering if it was a BOH restaurant workers being misunderstood noble savages type of thing

No, it isn't like that at all.

The show and its characters are purposefully frustrating at first.

The payoffs are wonderful.

And there are some characters that will annoy you forever, some that have amazing payoffs and transformations.

Not that it matters at all in the grand scheme of things, but these award shows need to come up with another category for these shows that kind of fall in the drama/comedy gray area. There seem to be more and more now.

It just seems silly that the show is considered a comedy. Yes, there are some funny parts, but it certainly shouldn't be pigeonholed into that one category.

Disagree completely. I've never worked in any service industry and get annoyed with folks plenty often. But the Bear is a great show. It's all about the relationships to me. I really enjoyed it.

If you've spent a good length of time in the restaurant industry, there's nothing funny about The Bear. If there's a PTSD for restaurant workers, this series triggers it.

Very true. I truly miss real comedies that are all about making you laugh.

I feel a little the same about Beef as The Bear. I just don't see Beef as a real comedy. So many comedies now are more about irony and sarcasm.

I have watched season one and half of season two so far. I really like this show and while there are some truly funny scenes and more funny scenes in season two than season one I would not say it’s a comedy.

The show is very intense.

Also, the characters become more likable in season two.

Definitely NOT a comedy.

One of the best shows I’ve ever seen, though. Definitely one of the best shows out today.

But, not a comedy.

NO. All it is - screaming, yelling, frantic cooking. I think the show sucks but that's just me.

Gave me a headache listening to that shite. I don't care how busy a restaurant is, the back of the house is nothing on the same level they portray it to be.

Not just restaurant workers, but for those adjacent to them.

My former BiL was a high end Sous chef in Chicago for 15+ years. That life was a major stressor on their family. My sister refused to watch The Bear for a while because she had heard how real it was, and knew it would trigger PTSD.

She eventually bit the bullet, and appreciates it as an incredible show but a very tough watch.

There’s a lot of funny moments.

I don’t even remotely consider it a comedy

It is perhaps the best show on TV though. Certainly among my very favorites.

FunBunch almost nailed it. I would say it is a drama comedy. It's mostly drama, but they use comedy in the sense of real life people having funny moments with each other. It's not a joke style comedy as much as simply normal everyday humor that we all experience. It's a 90/10 split of drama/comedy

But I would never nominate or vote for this to win any comedy categories. It should win best TV series though, because it is.

It’s not really but neither is Barry and that was in the comedy category as well. Used to be that 20 years ago there was a pretty clear distinction between a comedy and a drama on TV. But there are so many dramadies now that the line has become blurred.

I still wake up and look at my alarm clock and try to figure out the ticket times on the line and how far in the weeds we are. Then I thankfully snap out of it.

It is tough for me. I loved the first season because of the restaurant themes. I still think the second season should have been maxing out the old restaurant and struggling with the idea of a teardown because of who owned it prior, with season 3 being the teardown rebirth.

It's funny because I get a bit of it, and the only "restaurants" I worked in were Subway and Raisin Canes.

Watched the first season. Wasn’t compelled to watch the second.
