I saw that "The Bear" won a ton of Emmy's for outstanding comedy. Never seen it. Often, shows that critics say are great comedies aren't actually funny. Is it actually funny?

There’s a lot of funny moments.

I don’t even remotely consider it a comedy

It is perhaps the best show on TV though. Certainly among my very favorites.

It’s got some funny moments but I wouldn’t even classify it as a comedy. It’s not really trying to be funny most of the time

It's a comedy like the Sopranos is a comedy (although much less overtly). Inherently dramatic show with some moments of good levity in there as well.

Should be classified as a drama for awards purposes.

Great show, but you wouldn’t watch it to laugh.

Amazing show.

Not a comedy.

I'll die on this hill, but season 2 might be the most overrated season in a long time. I hated the season until about the last 2 episodes

There are some episodes that are so overly stressful I'm not sure how you could consider it a comedy.

I think the awards committees have a stupid/simplistic analysis:

30 mins = comedy
60 mins = drama

I’m pretty sure studios submit in the categories they want to see their stuff run as well. My guess is the drama category is almost always so stacked that shows have started moving to the comedy category when possible.

The Bear is one of those comedy/dramas that blurs the line. It has comedic moments that are usually dark.

This was from show staff when asked:

quote:

Senior explained that, because episodes of The Bear are roughly a half-hour long, the series was eligible for the category. But that is not the only reason they feel the show should be competing as a comedy.

“What we want to do is tell the truth and make people feel things. If they’re laughing or crying…we can’t control what happens after that,” he said.

Deadline article (with a ton of pop ups, be forewarned)

They didn’t want to compete with Succession in Drama, which if we are being honest, is more of a comedy than The Bear.

I consider Succession to be a comedy with lots of drama mixed in (maybe a Dramedy, but its funnier than most of those)

The Bear is a drama with some small amounts of comedy mixed in

Fishes was straight up comedy gold..........yes that was sarcasm.

I find it to be a very compelling show, but no where near a comedy.

Probably not.

Everyone told me to watch it.

Watched the first 2 episodes then bailed. Characters are all annoying and unsympathetic.

Do you like ridiculously good television?

Then yes. It is very good. Just watch the entire first season. I found the characters annoying at first but it was done with a purpose and the payoffs are wonderful.

Don't listen to the idiot above, he has never been right about a single thing ever

Average runtime is 30min, which in TV signifies “comedy”. It also features a number of actors with comedic backgrounds, but playing dramatic roles. It has plenty of moments of levity, but at its heart it’s a drama.

It’s not a true comedy, but I get why it’s classified that way.

It's a drama more than a comedy. There's parts that are funny, but mostly its not.
