It’s been forever since I’ve seen either. Both obviously excellent. Both different aims.

I am going to get downvoted to hell and back, but I found Black Hawk Down to be overlong and overrated. Good movie. But not as good as people make it out to be.

I don’t think it’s better, but it is awesome though.

And I made a thread years ago about how it has arguably the best cast ever. It’s incredible how many famous actors are in that movie. And a lot of them before their time even.

You shouldn't be downvoted.

It's a chaotic film that is sometimes a mess to get through.

Saving Private Ryan has a rewatchable story we can all follow without paying rapt attention.

Black Hawk Down is for a sound system but I doubt people watch it over and over and over again.

TBH I like BHD more than SPR. I don't think its a better movie but I do prefer watching it.

I watched it for the first time a few months ago. Thought it was crap. Didn’t even finish watching it b/c I simply didn’t care about it, and I love war movies.

Outside of the first 45 mins, SPR is one of the most overrated films of all time. It's fairly pedestrian after that killer start. Good movie overall, but it lacks a great script or great characters. (Shakespeare in Love winning over is not crazy, it's actually slightly better and more interesting as a film overall).

BHD isn't necessarily better, but the action sequences are better, and the cast is better by a good bit, but you are less invested because the cast is so expansive.

Both do a good job of hitting their tone- the tense street fighting of BHD and the long march and defense of SPR.

Probably about equal in terms of quality, but I watch BHD, and look forward to it more than anything outside of the first 45 of SPR. I find SPR is just background noise after the start, it just kind of drags.

I remember thinking that the first few times I watched it. For some reason they last time I watched it I really enjoyed it a bunch and just saw more to value and appreciate in it. Maybe it’s an age thing. I’ll watch it again soon and see how I feel.

One thing that’s interesting is how many of them weren’t Americans but Brits or Anglos.

The Ridley Scott influence.

Gonna have to disagree.

That cast in SPR was brilliant.

And those opening and climactic battles may be the best in cinema.

Great movie that shows the absolute idiocy of the US trying to play world police while at the same time preserving the nobility and respect for the guys on the ground.

I think Black Hawk Down got better with re-watches. I can't say the same for Saving Private Ryan. I watched it in the theater once, and once on TV at home. It was hard to get through it during the re-watch, and I have no desire to see it again.

I probably watch BHD once every two or three months. The feelings I had about some of the characters changed because I had missed something they said or did the first time through.

Both films are very well done for different reasons. BHD soundtrack (Hans Zimmer) nudges SPR acting which is carried by Tom Hanks more so than the supporting cast.

BHD is ensemble cast at its wartime best, as is The Thin Red Line which has an awesome cast. I actually enjoyed the poetic TTRL more than all of them.

Though not an actual war movie, per se, I put The Kingdom right in with these flicks for cast, interest and tension.

They’re both really good. Although SPR is very rewatchable whereas BHD is just less rewatchable. I will say spr is probably better of a film either way but bhd is legit af

If you want to wring out pure joy from your new system then put on a Blu-ray copy of War Horse and smile at your new purchase.

I have a 9.2.2 Yamaha/Klipsch setup and use War Horse as my demo.

I am waiting on my new MArantz SR5015 to come in for my birthday. When that gets in, I am going to throw on Mad Max Fury Road and crank it.

It is a funny set up. We are looking to move so I didn’t want to upgrade the TV to something that might not fit in the new house. So, I have a 5.1 of Klipsch RP speakers connected to an APPLE TV 4K and a SVS PB-1000 sub in a room with a 6 year old 60 inch Samsung 1080P TV

You are not the first person to say this and I don't get it. SPR had a stellar cast and blows away BHD. Unless you try to discount cameos..

Hanks
Damon
Burns
Sizemore
Diesel
Davies
Pepper
Danson
Ribisi
Goldberg
Giamatti
Cranston
Fillion
Farina
Hurst

There are a ton more that are very recognizable. So how is BHD so much better?
