sandler got paid 275 million dollars to make a much worse movie than the original.

This lines up with today's society though

Make 2 million for a instant classic movie in 1996. Make 275 million for a below average movie today

But anyway, the movie was worse that I was expecting. Could have been decent, but was really just plain bad.

There's a guy on the golf board saying he liked it better than the first and I refuse to believe that is possible. Unless you're 15 years old and have never seen the first one.

Only plausible reason is Golf Board = golf cameos.

- Bad Bunny and Daly were great
- Maxi tournament was bad.
- Rory an awful actor. Scottie did good
- Cameos were fun. Didn’t see it mentioned but Boban as that dudes son was hilarious

Kinda wild seeing the negative reviews. Was a classic 90s dumb humor movie. I enjoyed it.

Not surprised. I'm not a fan of sequels that take a decade or more after the original to come out.

I went in with very low expectations.

Wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Pure nostalgia bait

I got 90 minutes with some old friends. Worth it, imo

There were people ready to hate on this the moment it was announced no matter what. This thread just proves it. It wasn't great but it was better than any reasonable person thought it would be. Honestly it was as good as the original for me up until the 3rd act.

Even the 3rd act maxi tournament that was really the worst part had some funny moments.

- Golfer training for Maxi with the caddy and his cousin
- Scottie jokes
- Dechambeau saying those were his nipples referring to Rory
- Lunquist saying that was some gangster shite
- More John Daly scenes
- the happy Golf tee and ball drop "can't do that with surgery" line

all minor bright spots in a overall bad third act.

The way these flashbacks are being mentioned in this thread is wild. I was thinking there was going to be minutes long flashbacks wasting time, but there were only a few seconds here and there and didn't ruin anything at all for me.

How else are you supposed to beat a seasoned Happy Gilmore, though, without rehashing the same injury storyline from the original Happy Gilmore?

It's not the same Happy trying to learn how to golf like the original. He has years of experience and multiple gold jackets by the time of events in Happy Gilmore 2.

Happy was unbeatable in his return before hitting the booze.

I just kind of viewed the Maxi Golf stuff as the writers taking a chance on something new instead of just doing the same move as the first one to create some sort of competitive drama.

What injury in the original? He could just hit it far. Had nothing to do with any injury.

I finished HG2 last night and I enjoyed it. It wasn’t very good but I wasn’t expecting it to be and went in with a low bar. The Maxi course was obviously stupid but the movie didn’t take itself too seriously and made fun of itself a good bit. I can appreciate that.

I actually liked what they did with Shooter, and the nostalgia was good.

It was about what I was expecting it to be. Not sure I’ll watch it again any time soon, but all in all I liked it.

The climax of the original movie when he was hit by a car on the course (injured and losing long drive ability) and then had to play regular golf to win the open before the wild mini golf shot on the final hole?

There's no drama in Happy Gilmore 2 if Happy just comes out of retirement to collect a check and wins the major due to his long drive and refined other golf skills.

It wasn't that bad. Could've been an 1 hour 40. They just threw everything at the wall and some stuck more. The plot with the new golf and maxi was the bones for me. The cameos and callbacks were a bit much sometimes, felt like an old MTV video style movie. People with ADHD should love this movie

The last 30 minutes it turned into an over the top mess that you had to have major suspension of belief to even view it as a sci-fi movie
Yeah I don’t disagree there. Definitely had to suspend some belief to get through the end. It just had enough good imo to rate it higher than the first half. I thought the first half was just lazy callbacks while the 2nd half had some solid bits. The first Zalatoris scene was so great, imo.

The Golden Tee style bullshite at the end was bad, though.

I shared this on the HG2 Trailer thread, but I'll share it here as well.

For me, it started off promising, but the whole Maxi competition just got too painful.

I read this on IMDB

"There were plans for Carl Weathers to return as Chubbs before his death in 2024. Adam Sandler said, "We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away. We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change."

So I can't help to wonder if it would've been better with the original movie idea.

I don't know, my job is not a movie writer. But I'm sure if I thought about it enough I could come up with something more realistic and believable than what they did. I know it's not trying to be a true story, but it was still trying to be semi realistic in the original HG and 2/3 into this one. Then it went off the rails.

Even taking out the clipping tendons in their spine, the players, course, greens, CGI, jokes, etc. were just terrible. Again, they literally had a guy with a chainsaw as one of the competitors. I mean what the f.

The writing was just lazy too. The very end was a perfect example. Happy is driving off and the car dies and he shouts inside the car "THE BATTERIES DEAD!" Then walks off into the sunset. Like the car battery was supposed to be some call back joke from earlier but was actually just a bad, random joke that had nothing to do with the entire movie. That's really how you're going to end the movie?

It wasn't the worst movie I've ever watched, and again, the years later sequels to great comedies are never great, so I wasn't expecting this to be great. It's just the last part was so so bad.

Agree

Think it just came down to them trying to figure out a way to give Happy a challenge and they went with silly instead of trying to come up with something more realistic.

I initially thought they would be parodying Tiger's indoor golf league until they got to the actual courses, which probably could have worked a little better in terms of realism.

Shooter in jail reading The Shining and laughing the entire time made the movie worth watching. Beyond that, it was less than forgettable until the end with Scottie Scheffler relaxing in jail and asking what's for dinner? The answer....."Chicken Fingers". "" cool, I'll stay another night"
