IGN: George R.R. Martin wishes the Game of Thrones books had stayed ahead of the series

This story and the ongoing saga of GoT fans waiting for the mythical sixth book in the series makes me thankful for authors like J.K. Rowling. I was a HUGE fan of the HP novels as a child/teenager in the late-90s/early-00s. The three-year wait between Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix from 2000-03 felt neverending. I can't imagine what Game of Thrones fans have endured these past 10 years waiting for the next novel in the series.
While I realize Martin's novels are far more mature and complex than Harry Potter, Rowling juggled many of the same things Martin has over the last decade (creative consultant, numerous interviews, public appearances, etc.) while also getting married and having children. Her novels stayed well ahead of the film adaptations.

I’m not going to lie and say I’m not going to read the book if it’s ever released, but I’m damn well past the point of eagerness or expectations.

I started reading a song of ice and fire in 2008. never thought the series would still be unfinished in 2021.

Yeah so do we George. You’re the only one to blame for that one. And years later, we’re still nowhere closer.
Well that’s what I would say to him if he read this thread.

That final season thread really was something else. Ole Fun Bunch and that idiot social worker Kentucky fan fought till the bitter end.

Probably being told interest for the spin off isn't what he expected.

Interest in anything GoT went off of a cliff with those two final seasons.

I started turning on the show after The Battle of Winterfell though it wasn't until Dany burned down King's Landing that I knew I absolutely hated season eight. By the end of the series finale, I knew I'd never watch a single episode of the show ever again.

Obviously not or he would have 1 either finished the books or 2 not told HBO the end.
It's been ten years since his last book in the series was finished. He could EASILY have written 3 pages a day for the last 8 years and finished another 7000 pages before the tv show ended

It was hilarious people defending “The Long Night” when it was clearly at the time anticlimactic, ridiculous, and just terrible. I got shite on, but the show was completely dead for me the moment Arya snuck past hundreds of wights with no explanation and killed the Night King. From there I just looked at it as a comedy. It just took most the audience another 2 episodes to realize what was going on.

Idk man. I remember a lot of people shitting on Arya killing the Night King a lot and not just on here but Twitter as well.

Yeah, a third of us were saying it, but most were saying it was epic with Arya killing the Night King and “Best Episode Eva!” I wasn’t alone, but we were shite on by the majority, and then two episodes later everyone was “yeah, y’all were right. Sorry for doubting y’all.”

The show started getting noticeable amounts of criticism season 5 onwards. Season 7 is where a lot of people started to turn on the show. The whole beyond the wall episode was utterly stupid but I do remember defending parts of it. But even then, I think the vast majority of people were in love with the show up until the 2nd to last episode.
