Alexandria was culturally Greek. Citizenship was reserved for Greeks and Macedonians, Greek was the spoken and written language of the educated class, and it was governed by Greek law. Alexander the Great intended it to be the Hellenistic hub of the world, and it was for a few centuries.
Correct it was a Greek cultural city in Africa. And it’s slightly disingenuous to say Alexander intended it to be the Hellenistic Hub of the world, Ptolemy the Great should get credit for that.

Cleopatra was actually the first ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty who learned to speak languages other than Greek, and that was primarily due to her political savvy. Saying she "qualifies" as African instead of Greek simply because the Ptolemies resided on the south coast of the Mediterranean is sort of disingenuous.
Also all very true but I don’t see how it’s disingenuous to say she’s from Africa when literally she was born in Africa and her family had lived there for centuries. My ancestors moved here from Germany 200 years ago, I don’t claim to be German.
when the discussion is about what she would appear visually to most modern day people then i think its very important to qualify that alexendria for most real purpose was a greek city in africa, not an african city.

the reason it’s okay for black people to play roles traditionally played by whites and not okay for white people to play other races is because 99% of every role for a hundred years was written for white people. A little inclusion and diversity is not harming anyone cause now only 90% of roles are for white people.

Reminds me of years ago when History Channel did a series about great generals and made Hannibal and all of the Carthaginians black.

Wasn't it Bob Costas who referred to some folks as "African Americans" during the Olympics even though they weren't Americans?
It's probably happened more than once as people are conditioned to use black & AA interchangeably

there's this coin, minted by Mark Antony, toward the end of her life.
"I, er... I mean, I think it's, uh, very flattering."

you really think Genghis Kahn was the only instance of blackface (asianface) in the history of Hollywood?
The correct buzzword is "yellowface"
try to keep up with the talking points half-wit

Well, you did specifically reference it two posts previously.

Hell, white people deserve about 70 more years of white characters being portrayed by non-white actors as punishment for John Wayne as Genghis Khan. When you throw in Mickey Rooney, all bets are off.
That was you, right?
And why would white people need to be punished for a poorly cast film from 1956? That's a pretty stupid premise, isn't it?

i feel like the math is off on that. a little bit.
a black man (Bert Williams) was lead in a film in 1914. the first really accepted "film" was 1902.

Don’t be obtuse. John Wayne played Gengis Kahn, Alec Guinness an Arab Mickey Rooney a Japanese man. Those past bad decisions do not justify punishing people in the present but let’s not act like Hollywood was representative in the past.

From my linked video earlier, here's the version of Cleopatra reconstructed as a redhead.
The brunette version of her is also quite stunning. But it's said that she was more intelligent and gregarious than drop dead beautiful. I'm guessing she had eye catching looks, but really knew how to work with what she had.

I think what I find so striking about the statement is that there was a time when Hollywood used their leading men and ladies to bring in the most eyeballs possible-- they would get their actors on press tours to make them beloved in the eyes of potential moviegoers. Even a controversial thing was handled delicately.
And now, the attitude so often is "don't watch it, we don't fricking want you" and they wonder why their media is tanking.

I may still check this out when it is streaming for free, but cleopatra definitely was not black

To be honest here, what else should the actress that got the role say? Hell, if I got the role of Cleopatra I would say the same thing, and I am a dude.

The hubris of JPS who destroyed the life and career of her husband teaming up with Netflix (who gave us Cuties) and thinking this was going to be a stellar success is mind blowing.
All I want to know is who that elderly lady was in the trailer recalling when her grandmother emphatically declared that no matter what anyone tells you, Cle was BLACK!
That's so god damn ludicrous! How the ever-loving hell would grandma ever know that??

Maybe her grandmother got confused and was thinking of Miss Cleo not Cleopatra.

After watching the trailer, the actress honestly couldve passed for a slightly darker than accurate Cleopatra, but their insistence that Cleopatra was black ruins that too.
