I figured I’d wait for the director’s cut. He almost always makes these big epics that should really be miniseries or something like that.

I mean, how much of this film is pure fiction?

That’s disappointing. I wonder why people don’t stick to true events when often it is more spectacular than fiction.

For whatever it’s worth, I’m reading a biography called Napoleon: A Life. It’s pretty long (~800 pages)

This giant brick of a book is considered the definitive Napoleon biography and has been sitting in my living room for about five years unread.

I've found it engaging enough that I'm on about page ~520 in about 3 weeks

It's going to be VERY tough to ever see an honest film about Napoleon. WAY too much of what we now consider "settled history" about him is the product of British historians, who, generally are biased.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Fact: Napoleon decided to crown himself Emperor. The British historical interpretation of this is that it is a demonstration of his extreme megalomania and desire to be a total Dictator. End of story. But, is it?

The British historical interpretation fails to note that, prior to the many years before he crowned himself in Dec, 1804, Britian sponsored several secret operations whose Objective was to assassinate him. Napoleon knew that if he were a fellow Royal, like the Allied national leaders, it would probably end those efforts to assassinate him, because the European Royalty wanted to avoid that precedent - assassination of Royals. Napoleon was right about that.

Another historical fact that is portrayed somewhat in the movie is the fact that he did indeed want peace back in 1802, and again in 1807 when he struck a deal with the Russian Czar. The British and Austria were the ones who wanted no peace with him. This interpretation is almost never explained in an English language history book - Napoleon is almost always interpreted to be a lunatic war-monger and blood-guzzler.

In sum, IMHO, we will probably never see an English language HONEST interpretation of Napoleonic history.

IMHO, beware of British military historians because they tend to be biased towards their side.

Why is this comment so heavily downvoted?

If it's historically inaccurate, can someone who downvoted comment on where this user is getting it wrong so we can all learn?

I saw it this afternoon. Of course it was visually great and the cannon fire was excellent. It was well acted but I didn’t feel the storyline was good enough for me to love it. I’ve been kinda disappointed with the last few movies I thought I’d love, Oppenheimer, Flower Moon, and the Killer come to mind like this one. Rats

I wholeheartedly agree and appreciate your defence of Bonaparte, mate.

Have you seen the "Bonaparte" miniseries from the early 2000's featuring Christian Cavalier, Isabella Rosselini, based Gerard DiPardieu, and John Malcovich as Tallyrand? I've watched it many times and think it will wind up being much fairer to the great man than this one is

I do recommend seeing this theatrical release. The 4 hour version may be better, but, this version is worth seeing now. It is a fine piece of artistic film-making.

Vanessa Kirby was the true stand out of the picture.

Haven't seen the movie. But I've liked her since the crown. Something about her soft, rounded face. What a smoke show.

I’d been looking forward to this for all year and it was just so meh

The battle scenes were great sure but there was so much awkward staring and pointless conversation between Napoleon and Josephine

Not even a top 10 Ridley Scott movie for me

Also.. downvote away .. Vanessa Kirby just does not do it for me at all. She has that Nicole Kidman super pasty type skin and she looks like a skeleton

For you Napoleon history fans, Dr. Alexander Mikaberidze is Professor of History at LSUS and a noted Napoleon scholar who has written about him extensively.

Dr. Alex was born in Kazakh and raised/educated in Georgia (the country), so he's not bound to the English view.

His 2020 book "The Napoleonic Wars: A Global History" has won awards and strong reviews. I want to read it, but it's 960 pages, so I may have to wait for retirement or a long vacation.

He's posted about the movie on Twitter:

"Attended an early screening of the "Napoleon" movie... it would be an understatement to say that it is bad... Waterloo being fought in what appear to be trenches is just one of a litany of problems... why, Sir Ridley, why?!"

"The Revolution was reduced to a lampoon."

"Sure, a few strong points - the pageantry of the Napoleonic uniforms is there, and Phoenix occasionally delivers as Napoleon - but the rest... you just need to see it... Wellington asking if he could sit down in Napoleon's presence while meeting him on a British warship..."

"I do not have an issue with an artistic license but the script is too weak, most of it is an akward swipe at Napoleon in domestic life, interspersed with battle scenes."

***
Me: We should have learned by now that most history movies and those based on a good book are going to be a disappointment. There will be inaccuracies and material inserted to appeal to women and a broad international audience, and that stuff will drive you crazy if you are looking for a faithful retelling.

Yeah but if you can’t even get the battles correct, what’s the point.

This is a spot on take. I found it awkwardly negative on Napoleon.

I wasn’t expecting a hero making or even a positive portrayal, but it was so negative I found myself thinking anyone in the theater without prior knowledge would be wondering why the fifth regiment wouldn’t have just arrested Napoleon upon his return from Elba.
