In no particular order:
Das Boot
Pans Labyrinth
City of God
Mesrine (action flick about French criminal)
Elite Squad (action film about Brazilian task force)
Rape of Nanking
Apocolypto

I saw a Danish Nazi movie on Netflix a few years ago that was really good. I cannot remember the name at all.

Some good recommendations you have already gotten. Even though you say "no action", I would still recommend Hero now that you said it's a girl. I watched this with a friend and she loved it. Something to get her to watch after she accepts how good a subtitled movie can be.

Also recommended:

Amores Perros
La Femme Nikita
The Assassin Next Door
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

All of these have strong female characters/themes featured prominently.

Pan's Labyrinth is the easy first choice.

I really enjoyed The Black Book. Dutch film about a Jewish girl's (Played by Carice van Houten - Melisende from GOT)journey with the Dutch resistance and the corruption/collusion with Nazis. It's quite intense.

Yea, Cotillard is definitely a plus. It isn't my night to choose though and the girl who is picking tonight is picking between Love Me if You Dare and Stardust.

I'm hoping Love Me if You Dare wins out because I've already seen Stardust.

Devil's Backbone was mentioned...
Das Experiment
The Raid: Redemption

I just couldn't really get into that one for some reason.

But great list y'all hopefully once I show her Amelie all the others will be future options. Looks like a good bit of movies I have never seen either.

Thanks
