I enjoyed the shite out of the originals. The animation hasn't held up that well, but I'm just not sure I need this uncanny valley version.

The re-making of Disney movies that are barely 10 yrs old, ugh.

I've seen some great reviews from unlikely sources. Many have said that the refining of the dragon made him a bit less expressive, but the action sequences feel far more real and dangerous.
Other than that, it's very much the same story. There are a few changes but aside from the woke angle that the colonizer humans took the dragon land (they didn't in the cartoon) it's very well received.
I haven't seen it. That's just what I've heard a lot.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Roaring to $83M U.S. Opening, $200M Globally
quote:
Borrowing a page from Disney’s playbook is paying off big time for Universal at the box office, where the live-action remake of DreamWorks Animation‘s How to Train Your Dragon is headed for a series-best domestic opening of $82.7 million and $200.8 million globally, according to official early estimates. That includes a huge international haul of $117.7 million from 53 markets.
Graced with rave exit scores from moviegoers — including an A CinemaScore and an almost-unheard-of 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes — the $150 million summer event pic is winning over both families and younger single adults who grew up on the animated franchise.

Saw it. Thought it was perfectly fine. No regrets buying the ticket.
Gerard Butler is good in it.

lilo and stitch is 20+ years old
but Moana I guess you just try and get it done while you can still cast the Rock as Maui.

Saw it last night. They did change the look of some of the dragons to make them look more realistic, but Toothless is pretty much unchanged. He's still as cute and expressive as he was in the animated original.

I don't recall that being mentioned, but they did go the multi-cultural route with the Vikings. Not as in your face as Disney probably would've though. They explain it by stating that Berk is a compilation of dragon slayers from all around the world.
Overall, it was ok. Not nearly as good as the original, but not bad. To me, it lacked the charm of the animated version, and it certainly wasn't nearly as colorful. In fact, it's pretty drab. I guess they wanted to make it look more authentic.
John Powell returns to compose the music, which I always felt he should've won an Oscar for with the original. Mason Thames is good as Hiccup. Gerard Butler is good as Stoic. Toothless is still Toothless. Astrid starts off as a bitchy girl boss type, but softens considerably, although I didn't really feel the connection between her and Hiccup like I did in the animated version.
Like I said, overall it was fine. Universal didn't ruin it like Disney did with Snow White, but I still much prefer the original. It does make me want to take a trip to Epic Universe, which I'm sure is part of their plan.

Watched it today.
I could barely see what was happening in the 1st few scenes. Way too dark.
Still a good, nostalgic ride.

While this movie wasn’t necessary, I needed it. This was my two oldest kids favorite cartoon growing up. One just finished his first year at college and the other one is about to start her first year. It was incredibly nostalgic to revisit this story and in a time of transition it did this dads heart good.

Saw it with extended family today. It was solid and faithful. While I had my eye rolling at the race swaps, they didn’t make a thing of it which is all I can ask for. The kids/trainees cast were pretty weak.
The only “improvement” was the interaction with Stoic and Hiccup before he takes off to fight the alpha with Toothless. Had a bit more gravity with live actors. The whole third act was miles better than the first two.
Worthy of a watch.

Ive never seen the animated movie, I'm old enough to be glad I don't have to watch animated movies anymore. But my wife and I took our 9 yr old grandson to see the live version today. We all liked it very much. There were the obligatory alpha females and beta males but outside of that it was very enjoyable.

I think it is funny the ado about the girl playing astrid She looks white af in the trailer Like, advanced white
Well, she’s obviously not advanced white. She’s fine enough but they could’ve just gotten a blonde like the original

Not unlike the Hermione Granger casting. Not 'white', but pretty darn close.
It’s the Pedro Pascal effect. Still white or near-white but can also check a diversity box.

Nope. Ive never had a problem with a white person being cast in a movie.
All my favorite movies have white people in them.
I understand how that doesn't make sense to you because you have issues with non-white people being cast. But it doesnt have to be that way or the opposite. You can just enjoy all colors of people being cast, it doesnt have to be one or the other.

Great to hear! The animated version is almost a perfect movie, so if they followed that recipe i might have to take my daughter to the theaters for this one and catch it in imax. Not sure i can wait 3 months.

You don't cast this chick as your viking girl unless you're virtue signaling. Painting her white is kind of ridiculous.
They 100% could have found a good actress that looked like the animated Astrid. They did the casting for virtue signaling. Theyll lose a few folks that would have gone to the theatres to see it...but will instead just wait for streaming
