How good is Star Trek DS9 relative to TNG?

TNG is the only Star Trek that I've ever seen aside from pretty much all of the films. I'd probably seen 95% of the episodes during my teenage years, and just finished a rewatch that I thoroughly enjoyed.

From what I've read, DS9 is worth a watch. I'm now 10 episodes in, and it's been a pretty even split of good episodes, OK episodes, and turds. TNG's first season was mostly turds, so that's an improvement. But does the series get better over time? Does it end up having any episodes that flirt with the quality of "The Dying Light" , "Measure of a Man", or other top tier TNG episodes? TNG had about a dozen pretty elite episodes over the series run that really made it worth watching. Otherwise, it was similar to what I've seen from DS9 (good + OK + turds).

DS9 picks up around the end of season 2, IMHO.

A few races start showing up which become a major part of the show for the remainder of its run.

DS9 has a very similar trajectory as TNG. A couple of decent episodes in season 1 but mainly cheesy turds feeling out and introducing the characters, a season 2 that has some better winners but still a few turds, and then season 3 onward really takes off. There are a few episodes of DS9 that I would rate as high or even higher than some of the best TNG episodes...

But also some of their turds are stinkier than TNG's too

I was never into DS9 because they never went anywhere. I like the other shows that take place on ships that travel around finding new things, a la the OT intro.

Honestly, I skipped S1 during the rewatch because I remember mostly disliking it back in the day. I just went through the episode list on IMDB, and there are at least 4 that I remember liking, so I'll give it another go.

And I agree that the lack of new environments has been a negative so far. But the wormhole looks like a good setup to meet a bunch of interesting new species/cultures.

Overall, I would say TNG is better but part of that is nostalgia for coming first and for revitalizing Star Trek. There would be no DS9 without TNG.

However, imo the best of DS9 is better than the best of TNG. TNG does do a better job with the self contained episodes. Though I can think of one DS9 self contained episode that might be the best of either series. That episode is one of my favorites of any tv series.

What makes DS9 the best is its multi episode story arcs even spanning seasons which were awesome. This is similar to what made Babylon 5 great.

I had never thought about it in terms of B5 before, but you're right. Once they decided what the Delta Quadrant was really going to be about, they decided on a slow buildup by bringing in more local stuff (Bajor/occupation, not wanting to spoil anything) before really fleshing out the Delta Quadrant (which would become a big story on its own).

Sisko is the best captain after Kirk.

It’s a solid show.

Honestly, we were very late to DS9 and didn't watch very much when it aired. Same trouble as Voyager, where they were bouncing around cable systems, Paramount didn't know how to manage things in Star Trek (IMHO), particularly once TNG went movie mode.

So, finally getting into it, binge mode, years later and I honestly rate DS9 roughly on par with TNG as the best Trek since TOS. The threaded storylines were ahead of their time (along with competitor Babylon 5). The only things that TNG have over DS9 are Picard and Data.

TNG Worf? DS9 has Worf, too, and a better version IMHO.

TNG Q? DS9 has a whole rogue's gallery of great villains, Winn Adami, Weyoun, the female shapeshifter and, of course, Gul Dukat (possibly the greatest, most complete, 4-dimensional villain in all of filmed science fiction history).

TNG Borg? Jem'Hadar.

The list goes on an on. DS9 feels like a real, living, breathing community. Quark and Rom, Garak, TNG has nothing like that. TNG was an outstanding "monster of the week" show (as was TOS, no secret my favorite show of all time). DS9 had the framework to tell some great hard science fiction stories in an entertaining way.

DS9 Worf is best Worf.

Gul Dukat is indeed top tier. Though I do love me some Q/John de Lancie.

With all the great characters in DS9 my favorite is Garak; he's not even Starfleet and just a simple tailor.

Garak+Bashere is more entertaining for me than Data+Geordi which is pretty tough to beat.

DS9 is a little different in that it’s set inside a station and has the ongoing story of cardassians and bajorians. You also have the wormhole stuff. Versus TNG on the ship.

It is one of my favorite sci fi series ever. Some of that is nostalgia.

Buck Bukai walked so Ichiro, Bjung yung Kim and Ohtani could run.

Keep in mind that TNG and DS9 are completely different types of Star Trek shows. TNG kind of follows the path left behind by TOS where it focuses on exploration of brand new planets and races. DS9's core premise, while they do explore a whole new quadrant of space, is more about what all out war (as opposed to the cold war aspect of TOS) would look like in the Star Trek universe.

After it’s first season DS9 is much more consistent but never hits the peaks TNG does.

That said, I’ll fight anyone to the death that even puts Voyager in the same tier as DS9.

Voyager was good but why shows like lower decks and Picard give Voyager BJ’s and only refer to Kira and O'Brien as if they were the only good things from DS9 blows my mind.

ETA I’m this close to putting Strange New World's over Voyager

Except for when they went places thru the worm hole in Sisko’s attack ship.

Just did a rewatch a few months ago. I'd say the first couple of seasons are setting the table, establishing the characters for the main course of the series that comes later. Stick with it and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
