Ah OK. That makes more sense - so I assume the stuff about their childhood friendship was added for the show.
I kind of get it. On one hand I can see how GRRM’s age choices kind of make sense given the setting and technology level. People presumably married and had families very young, with much shorter life expectancies.
OTOH, I’m not sure it would translate very well to the screen at those ages. Casting would be much more difficult, and it’s hard to portray leaders as being high school or college age without falling into certain stereotypes around youth / inexperience (even when they aren’t intended or warranted).

For real life reference, Alexander the Great was 20 when he conquered the world. Back in history, younger people were in charge because like you said, people didn't live very long.

Can we get this thread renamed to the Helaenas thread? And keep it going since the other weekly new episode thread has spoilers from the book
How about that ending for e7? I thought the old drunk supposed Targ bastard was about to get bbq’d by Silverwing. Pretty damn good setup for the season finale

That ending scene was so badass...Bring on that big bitch, Vhagar!

Greens are fricked
They have Vhagar, and Helaena’s dragon
Blacks now have Syrax, Vermax, Seasmoke, Vermithor, and Silverwing all on Dragonstone already. Plus Caraxes whenever Daemon decides to come back. And the wild dragon from the Vale that Rhaena is obviously about to claim.
Rhaenyra already knows she has at least 5 vs Vhagar with what she has at her disposal currently. Idk why she isn’t pressing that advantage right away and allowing Aemond to retreat on Vhagar. Unless Seasmoke was already airborne out of sight and that’s where the next episode picks up at

Turns out the dragonkeepers are kind of important lol what a fricking blood bath. Where did they go anyway?

Inexperienced riders not trained yet is my guess. I thought Ulf barely hanging on flying over King's Landing was their attempt at showing that.

I loved it. season 3 better be faster paced though. Otherwise this thing will go like 6 seasons and they will have to fill times with Harrenhal like BS. I defended the slow pace early in the season but they are going painfully slow.

quote:Did not see that coming. Wondering if she sent the Fredo dragonrider as bait, or if it was just fortuitous. She seemed to revel in showing off her power, but from a strategic standpoint it would seem better to keep them in hiding, draw Eye-Patch and his dragons out one by one, and dispatch them with her new air force.

I have a feeling he did that on his own.

Nah, it was definitely part of her plan. It wasn't a smart move because he now knows they have more dragons, but it was definitely a show of force.

I thought the Neverending Story dragon joyride at the end was cringe

quote:Pretty sure he was sent to bait Aemond and Vhagar into a trap. She had 2 more dragons with their riders mounted and ready for take off before Aemond caught a glimpse and retreated. No other reason 2 dragon riders would be saddled up sitting on the ground besides waiting to ambush.

quote:Vhagar is the only one she needs to take out. Helaena has Dreamfyre, but I get the impression that she isn’t cut out for combat. I thought I heard someone in the episode mention that young Daeron’s dragon had finally taken to the air, but even so a dragon that young wouldn’t be a match for any of the other dragons on the show who have riders. If Rhaenyra takes out Vhagar, the greens don’t have any more dragons that could challenge her.

They missed an opportunity to add a little humor to the show. Would have been funny to witness the meeting when they discuss the plan to lure Vhagar into a trap and watching her be like you're the bait cuz you're a drunk dipshit and we would be fine if we lose you.

Did the after show say that Rhaenyra planned to bait Aemond/Vhagar? It looked Ulf was just hanging on for dear life and Silverwing was joy riding. Although it doesnt make a ton of sense why they would pick Kings Landing to play around at. Vhagar clearly doesnt give a flying fk and would fly right into 10 dragons if Aegon let her.
Did anyone else think it weird that Ulf stepped right through one of Silverwing’s eggs? Was it rotten? Why didnt Silverwing eat him for just stumbling through the clutch of eggs and destroying one?

I didn't watch it but why else would Rhaenyra and all her dragons be ready to ride if it weren't on purpose? I'd also question why they didn't attack when Vhagar turned around. They had the numbers and Vhagar is the slowest Dragon alive so they could have caught her and overwhelmed her.

For what its worth, Silverwing is known to be the friendliest/tamest Dragon in Westeros. Now thats kind of like being the tallest midget, she is still a Dragon but maybe it explains why she didn't attack.
It also begs the question of why they wouldn't have tried to find her a rider first? She clearly would have been the easier Dragon to tame.

I'm really tired of hearing my wife say "they did nothing this episode".
Pacing has been rough but outside of Daemon and Alicent on holiday, I feel everything else has had purpose.
The memes from this episode have been hilarious.

I can't really comment on what will happen in this thread but I will say that after rooks rest, they spent entirely too much time in Harrenhal accomplishing almost nothing. For instance, Criston Cole is marching his army to Harrenhal now and we haven't seen him on screen since he left. There is no reason that Daemon and his hallucinations needed to be a third of the last 3 episodes. We got the point after the first episode of hallucinations, they are just beating a dead horse to fill time at this point.

Stretching it to 4 seasons maybe a mistake. Don’t get me wrong I love the show but as a lot of people pointed out the pacing is way too slow for casual viewers which is likely the overwhelming majority. Having another 2 year gap until next season is only going to compound the issue. Season 3 really needs to be a banger.

I chalked that up to the dragons sensing Vhagar was coming near and everyone was out of the castle while the new dragon riders had just been paired up and they were flying around getting acclimated.
