Discovered this on Reddit and read up on it a bit. Thought it was interesting and a bit creepy.
Story is that in 1963, Canadian author Mordecai Richler writes a book titled the Incomparable Atuk. Which is a story about a Canadian Inuit that moves to Toronto and adopts the greed and pretensions of the city.
Fast forward to the mid-1980's to 1990s. There is to be a film adaptation of the novel with the script written by a guy named Todd Carol and was to be filmed by Canadian Director Norman Jewison.
The first actor attached to the film was John Belushi who was offered the role in 1982, but would die a few months later.
Next the role was offered to Sam Kinison in 1988 and they would start filming for 8 days. Kinison had issues with the script and production halted. In 1992 production started again but Kinison would die in a car accident.
In 1994 they offered the role to John Candy who started reading the script. Same year he starts reading the script, he dies. Before doing so Candy tried to get a role in the movie for his friend, Michael O'Donoghue, who would die shortly after reading the script.
Next, in 1997, the film tries to start production again with a new actor...Chris Farley. Farley wanted the role because he heard that Belushi was involved. Few months after reading the script Farley would also pass away.
Before passing, Farley would let Phil Hartman read the script.
Afterwards production on this film completely stopped all together.
It should be noted however, that Will Ferrell, Jack Black, John Goodman, Josh Mostel, and Jonathan Winters were also interested in the film. There is some connection to Robin Williams but I haven't sorted that out yet.

Aside from the deaths, this sounds a lot like how they’ve tried to get a Confederacy of Dunces made forever but can never get it going.

Yeah, a movie script killed Belushi, Farley, and Sam Kinison.
Can't imagine it was something else they had in common. Or even two things.

They should make a movie about the movie script that kills people.
Then recreate the scene from Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Aldous Snow: Awful bloody film. I say, it's just a ridiculous premise. What would happen if your movie script killed you? Why would a movie script kill anyone? Doesn't make sense. How can a movie script have an agenda and kill people...
Peter Bretter: I told her that when she read the script
Aldous Snow: Yeah, you were the voice of reason, mate.
Peter Bretter: I tried to be, but she didn't listen.
Aldous Snow: Going around killing people. A movie script, like doing murders.
Peter Bretter: Why couldn't you just shred the script?
Aldous Snow: Right. That's it. The battle's over.
Peter Bretter: Yeah, we've won.
Aldous Snow: I hated it.
Sarah Marshall: Well, it's not for everyone, but it...
Peter Bretter: No, it's ridiculous. Here's my favorite scene. ‘Act I’ [Peter feigns death]
Aldous Snow: Right. It could never happen.
Sarah Marshall: It's a metaphor for addiction to movies.
Rachel Jansen: For society, how we're reliant on movies. I get it. I'm with you.

All kidding aside, that is an interesting subject and set of circumstances that I knew nothing about. Thanks for sharing.

This was back during a time when filmmakers were more concerned about hiring a bankable star than they were about diversity, equity, and inconclusion.

Dunces has had a lot of deaths but a good chunk of that is simply that having every fat man in Hollywood interested in it hurts your chances of getting it filmed due to poor health.
Kind of like Terry Gilliam trying to film a Don Quixote film with a 70+ year old actor, repeatedly, only for their health to habitually give in.

While I agree with your premise, Kinison was killed by a drunk driver in a head on collision on his way to a show. So he's not exactly the same situation as Belushi and Farley.

This is like the 30th movie I have heard of Belushi being attached to when he died. Dude was a hot property but methinks a lot of this is capitalizing on the sensationalism of his death.

Belushi died about 5 years before the screenwriter adapted the novel. He said in an interview that Sam Kinnison was the original actor, and actually did some shooting before the production fell apart

It was delivered packed within a kilo.

Can we start a GofundMe so they can offer it to Kathy Griffin next?
