But was Lord of the RIngs not a faithful adaption because of how they completely changed Faramir's character and motive?

This seems like a stretch. They didn't drastically change Faramir for the movies. Killing off Sarumon too soon and eliminating the "scouring of the Shire" was by far the biggest blemish on those movies.

Changing Snape's color adds an unnecessary racial component that obviously they will be unable to overcome. Whether or not that kills the show remains to be seen. Hopefully it's awesome anyway.

How did the Star Trek movies being released around the same time as the Harry Potter movies do compared to Harry Potter? The three combined for about the total of one of the eight HP movies.
do you not know now what "die hard" means? Potter has a ton of casual fans. Potter has nothing at all akin to Trekkies. They are a different breed.

we still don't know.

Starfleet Academy was considered a safe move. So was Rings of Power, She Hulk, and Wheel of Time.

Even good shows like the kiddie Star Wars show can repel viewers due to nonsense surrounding the ip

Well, this IS HBO. I am sure there will be a lot more nudity and sex.

The scouring of the Shire would not have worked in the movies as it would have been seen as anti-climatic.

Nothing. The series is based on the books, not a remake of the movies.

They’re changing the story

According to every set photo, leak, interview, etc that I’ve seen, they are being incredibly faithful in what they’ve filmed so far. For the first season they’ll have to add some filler, but it looks to be things like Ron and Hermione getting their letters, some pre-Hogwarts time with the Malfoys, Vernon’s odd day, shite with the flamels. World-building stuff that isn’t directly in the book but implied.

I’m excited for it.

They said they were “changing, adding and expanding scenes to offer a new version”

That's a good representation of the response to my accurate comment.

it very well could be. I would assume that they have already eaten the bulk of the costs already in set designs and wardrobe. The costs should be coming down on season 2 and that is probably why they have already renewed rather than viewership guiding it.

Has way more to do with the fact that they always planned to shoot S2 right on the heels of S1 for age reasons with the kids.

Also, I think this is one series where they aren’t going to have to worry about viewership. It’ll be enormous.

What?!?!?! This isn’t even remotely true. Do you have any idea how popular these books were. It was historical and it’s not even close.

Potter has some die hards, but most all Potter fans are casual fans. Like light versions of Game of Thrones fans.

Most pre-Kurtzman Star Trek fans are really. hardcore.
