its impossible to top the movie
A series that will go what 8 to 10 episodes covering one movie can't top a 3 hour movie?

Quick test for everyone here, pay attention to the bumper stickers on cars today. How many Harry Potter and Star Trek stickers will you see today during your commutes.

If that's the metric fans of Hello Kitty are the most die hard of them all

I don't know if I'v ever seen a bumper sticker for either, much less on a daily basis. Have no idea which side that would prove.

I think there are better way to look at:

- Box office results. The highest grossing Star Trek movie ever made about 1/5 of the Harry Potter series average.
- Book sales. Star Trek has been making books since the 60's and Harry Potter blows any book IP out of the water. LOTR, GoT, anything. Highest selling book series ever. Most book readers aren't casual fans.
- Social media following. Official Start Trek Instagram: 656K...Official Harry Potter IG: 13.2 Million. Biggest official Star Trek movie and show FB followers combined: 7.2M. Harry Potter movie alone, not including books, 69 million.

Sure, Star Trek might have an equal amount of people that cosplay at some comic con. Or maybe more bumper stickers. But real life fans and people that will actually watch a TV show (which is what is relevant to the discussion), there are a ton more Harry Potter fans.

If you think the "trekkie" analogue for Harry Potter exists in as large numbers, I think you are insane

Potter has more fans, but not nearly the same number of hardcore die hards

Avatar blows both out of the water, but that doesn't mean I would compare their fanbase with Star Trek.

There is absolutely no way you could possibly know this. All you have to do is look at fanfiction.net and you will see there are a TON more fan fiction stories involving HP than there are Star Trek.

I mean I'm showing you metrics on fanbase. You've had like 5 people in this thread alone tell you that you are crazy.

Do you have any type of metric that proves Star Trek has more hardcore fans that might prove your point other than Star Trek fans have a nickname? I mean on FB Potterheads have like 5x the amount of followers/largest group over Trekkies.

Unless your doing some weird "Take the hardest hard of hardcore fans and the Star Trek fans are the most insane" type thing. Sure. I guess. But that has no bearing on really anything that matters to this discussion because it's comparing a relatively small number of the fan base. The hardest core of both fanbases with people that would literally kill you if you said something bad about either, might have a higher numer with Star Trek, who know, but the sheer volume of hardcore fans is Potter fans and it's not really close.

Because it came out as the internet was kicking off.

Trekkies skew older

The number of Trekkies that can tell you every Enterprise captain from inception to Picard. . .or what every button on the console of Enterprise-D is for, is far higher than the number of Potter fans that can name 5 headmasters not named Dumbledore.

But yeah, there are probably more "shippers" into writing Potter fanfic

I am honestly going by my own experience as a big fan of both properties

There are no clear metrics to prove either way

Your metrics don't prove anything with respect to die hards

I have never met any Potter fans that are as devoted as Trekkies. They may love Harry Potter, but Trekkies live that shite.

return of the king still hasn't ended so i don't think it could be any more anti-climatic

Step outside the tigerdroppings bubble and you see a lot of excitement for this show.

All they had to do was not have a black Snape and EVERYONE might be excited for the show. But now we know they value ideologu over making a great show.

It doesn't technically mean it'll be a bad show, but making a great show wasn't the #1 priority.

Most pre-Kurtzman Star Trek fans are really. hardcore.

Yea, you're off on this. StarTrek die hards are in their forties to literally dying off, and hasn't been a relevant property in media in decades.

HP's fanbase outnumbers it by magnitudes in both number and enthusiasm.

The premiere is easily going to be the most watched HBO episode ever.
