I’ve seen Spirited Away, and want to watch another one of his films this evening with the family to celebrate (9 yo is the youngest).

What’s a good one to start out with? I’m thinking My Neighbor Totoro.

Personally I’d like to see Princess Mononoke but I think we have to see Nausicaä first.

For a nine year old, I’d go with Porco Rosso, Howl’s Moving Castle, or Castle in the Sky.

Seeing Princess Mononoke first like I did kind of ruins Nausicaa. Nausicaa is great, but it seems in retrospect to be a flawed first draft of Princess Mononoke. Princess Mononoke in my opinion is the single greatest animated film of all time, so I’d encourage you to watch Nausicaa first.

Oh man, you have some movies to watch.

Start with Howl’s Moving Castle.

Nausicaa
Princess Mononoke (can be a little dark for a 9 year old)
Castle in the Sky
Kiki’s Delivery Service
My Neighbor Totoro

But for the OP, you’re in for a treat. They are truly some of the greatest films of all time. Of the Top 20 Animated movies of all time, five of them are Miyazaki’s. Miyazaki is the greatest animator who has ever lived, even over Walt Disney.

They’re really beautiful movies.

It makes me miss pen and paint animation. Computer animation lacks the artistry.

never was about anime until for some reason I decided to watch Spirited Away. The story sucked me in and I never forgot it. I need to watch the rest of Miyazaki's films. I did like the Moving castle and Kiki's delivery service too.

what in the actual frick

Completely different movies and if you ever read the 1,500 page manga you wouldn't think this. The movie covers maybe the first 300 pages of the manga. There's so much more.

Nausicaa

Every other movie and I love them all.

You and I have gone back and forth on this, and no I have not read the manga, but on the surface of the films, they pretty much have the exact same plot, it’s just IMO Mononoke has the better characters, environment, tone, and ending than Nausicaa does.

Like I more vibe with the Wolf and Boar Gods from Mononoke than the insects from Nausicaa.

Nausicaa is great, don’t get me wrong, but Mononoke spoiled me and I think it’s the single greatest piece of animation ever drawn.

Yes we have

The whole Tolmekian vs Pejite war is a huge part of the manga and both countries did horrible things to each other.

The Valley of the Wind was unfortunately collateral damage when the battle spilled over when the Tolmekians discovered the Pejite had found a surviving God Warrior and were planning to use it so they stole it and that's why the ship crashed and infected the Valley with the poisonous insects.

I still think it's a better film but maybe it's because I saw it decades before Mononoke came out so I had a lot of time pre-internet to obsess over it and try to learn where it came from.

I loved the airship battles and how Nausicaa was slowly putting together what was actually going on with the toxic forest in her hidden lab.

The Tolmekians were brutal to the people of the valley..they killed tons of innocent civilians including the king.

Totally believable to me but the end of nausicaa was a bit of a cop out to reach a conclusion. Nothing nearly that trite exists in the books but I get he had to wrap it up with a bow to sell it to the masses.

I agree you're right by the time mononoke came out it feels like he had more ability to push his artistic vision and create a darker movie so you win that point.

I guess it's time for a rewatch of all his movies.

Finished Moving Castle tonight. Great movie and I can’t wait to see the next one. Thanks for the recommendations.

Ghibli fest is around the corner this spring. Will probably see a couple on the big screen then.

I'm hoping to turn meeple into a big nausicaa fan but remember it was done in like 1983 or something vs what.. The late 90s early 2000s for most of his other films?

I think it was hella bold for the time.

I bought the Nausicaa manga.

Huge box set.

Like you said, the movie covers only a small portion.

I do want to get all these movies in physical media.

I’ll be fine with that. One of my favorite shows from that time growing up was Belle and Sebastian. Old animation style but captivating nonetheless.

Miyazaki’s top works, IMO, are the following (in no particular order):

Howl’s Moving Castle
Spirited Away
Nausicaa
Princess Mononoke
Castle in the Sky

Others may switch Castle in the Sky with a different one, but the first four are essentials.

Fandago was running Studio Ghibli movies all summer in the theater. My kid wanted to see Ponyo, and I had that theme song stuck in my head for weeks.

Ponyo
Ponyo
Little fishy in the sea!

For a 9 year old, I'd pick Nausicaa over Princess Mononoke.
