As others have said, it was a Children of the Forest symbol first. The question is the significance of it to them.
Check out this one that was drawn in the cave on Dragonstone:
Notice the circle at the middle of the spiral. What does that remind you of? It reminds me of two things actually: a drain and an eye.
First let’s discuss the drain, for it leads to the other. Where in Westeros do we have a largely landlocked body of water that many rivers/streams likely drain into?
That would be the Gods’ Eye lake.
And what is sitting in the middle of that lake? Why the Isle of Faces, of course. The most sacred sanctuary of the Children of the Forest, littered with weirwood trees, where the Pact was made between them and the First Men and where the Green Men still stand guard.
This is the Endgame, folks. The Night King doesn’t give a damn about humans. Not really. He’s after the Children of the Forest and their sacred font of power on the Isle.

He’s not a Targaryen. They showed that he was one of the First Men and in that very scene that same design was shown on a aerial view.

Can you remind of the scene? I just don’t remember.

I am willing to bet that the godwood at winterfell was where he was stabbed. That tree is getting demolished when he takes winterfell.

The NK is a miserable person ... I mean he has dragon glass embedded in his chest for frick’s sake.
And he’s pissed at the little nymphs who gave him one wicked case of indigestion for all these years.
He’s just sending a signal that he’s out for revenge because of them.
Question is ... who is he after, who is he blaming, what is his goal. It’s obviously not just conquest, it’s revenge. It’s payback.
He’s sending a message and someone knows what it means.
Someone is in the NK’s sights. Not some place but some-one.
Who?

Damn. This is a theory. I can totally see this. I'm not shocked if anything is right or wrong anymore, but this I can get behind.

Didn’t the COTF create the Night King as a weapon against the first men and then lost control of him?
I agree it’s about revenge against them but also Bran because isn’t the 3ER basically a protector/ally of the children.
Speaking of the COTF are there even any left after the Night King took out OG Raven at the hollow tree.

I wonder if this is why he has children hanging up? The little girl in season one and umber demon baby in season 8?

If I remember correctly the NK was created to protect the CoTF from Men. I think that spiral is a ToTF symbol and the NK used it originally as like a “stay away from here or else this will happen....Love the NK” essentially. And that’s basically all it is.
Not some grand crazy story breaking theory.

There are only so many designs you can make when attaching severed limbs to a wall. It was an aesthetic decision on the part of the Night King.

Have they brought up the Isle of Faces on the show yet? That would be the only thing that hurts this theory.

I'm not sure. I think they talked about it back in the early seasons when Arya was at Harrenhall.

I really like this crackpot theory: The Night King was created north of the Wall. We know this because Bran goes back to that tree where the Night King was created in the present and the Night King sees him. Plus the location where he was created is far too mountainous for it to be the Isle of Faces. Maybe that’s where the children draw their power from, in which case your crackpot theory could work in a variation.
But nice Crackpot theory!
