This is another one of those fake sequels that's actually a reboot attempt.
I’m okay with that actually. I kinda see this as an origin story that pays homage to the founders and continues the story in the same universe. The sequel to this movie could happen while they’re in college.
The grandson may not be a college student type with him being a “gear head” as mentioned in a recent article, but the granddaughter certainly could be. She could be a prodigy for all we know.
And I think the mom is the daughter-in-law/not the daughter. She doesn’t have any features of Egon like the kids do.

Not a fan. Ghostbusters is not a little kids movie. Having a bunch of little kids as the main characters is a stupid arse idea.
It doesn't look like a kid's movie to me. It looks like a movie about a man's legacy and how it continues to affect his family after he's gone.

here's a theory summary of the plot. i wouldn't call it a spoiler though since nothing is certain yet. it kinda makes sense. the whole trailer could've been the first 30 minutes of the movie.
quote:
After being a huge percentage of the views on this trailer (like most of us) I wanted to take a crack at what we’ll see in this movie based on just this trailer.
The Spengler Family (going by their mother’s maiden name, not their Father’s) are evicted from their New York home and fall back to the only place they have left, the farm left to them by their Grandfather, Egon Spengler, in his will.
The town is plagued by strange earthquakes that seemingly have no explanation but are centered round the abandoned Shandor Mines. Odd things starting happening around the house that lead Phoebe to a (full) ghost trap under the floor boards in a room. Concurrently or slightly before her older brother Trevor finds the Ecto-1 in the barn and soon they uncover more of Egon’s old equipment in an underground lab.
Curious as to what all this strange stuff is they take the trap to their science teacher Mr. Grooberson who identifies what it is and fills the kids in on who their grandfather was. While still at school the trap is opened and it releases Slimer who starts causing havoc around the town. The kids set out to catch him by using the old equipment found around the farm including Ecto-1. This leads to the spree through town in the Ecto-1 which also draws the attention of the original team when video of Ecto-1 starts springing up online. (After all, a proton pack is not a toy!)
All the while the sinister machination in the Shandor mine come to a head and the kids and Grooberson set out to try and stop it. Things start to look grim before back-up arrives in the form of the remaining trio, Dana and Jeanine. The evil machinations are stopped but not fully and a new generation needs to figure out how to calm this latest supernatural threat.
Closing shot, Slimer flying towards the camera.
Other Notes:
The shattering bus windows with the ghost flying between them, seemingly knocking over Paul Rudd, have him wearing the same blue and white shirt as when he was looking at the ghost trap and showing the kids the video. Making me think the trap get's opened while they're at school.
Pheobe follows a PKE meter to the shed with the fire pole. I think the ghost of Egon is trying to guide his grand kids to the equipment to keep them safe. My theory is he'll be a haunting presence in the house guiding the kids to the the equipment. He'd also be the first truly benevolent ghost in GB lore.
The "blue ghost" is Slimer. It's so very easy to color correct green to blue and anyone familiar with Marvel trailers know that studios have gotten smart about editing the footage to hide reveals. Slimer is also the quintessential "training ghost" and since he was still free after GB2 Egon may have recaptured him, but no longer had a containment unit to store him in.

Young children as the "new" Ghostbusters makes no sense.
Let's look at the original Ghostbusters, the original trio all had multiple advanced degrees in various sciences are were extreme experts on the relevant subjects (Ray and Egon especially). They were professors at a college before they got fired.
It's also pretty clear that "Ghostbusting" is pretty dangerous work, as their lives are in jeopardy numerous times throughout the original two movies.
What about all that says "Yeah, perfect for little kids"?
Someone like Egon actually designing and building that equipment made sense. A bunch of 14 year olds? They're supposed to just magically understand how it all works because they are his offspring?
The original movie was filled with adult humor, tons of sex jokes and multiple conversations about religion, etc. you really think you're going to get ANY of that in a child centric movie?
Ghostbusters fans are far too eager to accept this shite because of the disaster of the femboot.
I wanted Ghostbusters 3, this isn't Ghostbusters 3. This is Ghostbusters Jr.

How would you feel if the kids screw up and the remaining original team has to show up and school them?
Posted on 12/10/19 at 4:01 pm to PEPE
They can have Paul Rudd and the kids play around with the equipment, maybe try to catch a few ghosts but get in over their heads. Then they have to call in Grandpa Egon's friends to save them.

i think this will be the case.
as mentioned in that summary, the ghost of egon, or some kind of spirtual presence of egon, lead the kids to the equipment.
the little sister takes the trap to school for show and tell, or clarification on what it is. paul rudd inform them on what it is.
unbeknownst to them, slimer is in the trap for some reason and accidentally release him.
the older brother, being the gear head, possibly knows how to drive. so he drives them around town trying to catch slimer.
it's 2019. someone on a street corner will have a cell phone and record the event/upload it to youtube.
news stations around the country catch wind of it, and plaster it all over the place.
the original guys see it, and make their way to oklahoma to spengler's farmhouse.
they arrive and take care of business.
it's barely/hardly "kid-centric".

The original Ghostbusters may be my favorite film of all time. It is a quintessential American masterpiece. That may sound like hyperbole, but I’m being serious. Words fail to describe it.
Ghostbusters 2 was good in its own right, but it had a distinctly different feel to it. Still good though.
I see this new one going the direction of ghostbusters 2 rather than the original, which will still be great. I suppose the only bad thing about the original ghostbusters was that it set the bar so high, nothing will ever be able to reach that mark.

quote:Kids discovering and getting into shite they should leave alone is a classic story premise. They don't have to have invented the equipment to use it.

quote:So were Stand By Me and Superbad. My middle school friends and I relished in that kind of humor.

My bigger problem is that it's yet another movie that insists on having a female central character. This actress isn't some up and coming comedic super talent, so they weren't looking for funny. They were looking for a girl. It's an agenda and that sets a bad tone.
But it doesn't mean it will be a bad movie. She can walk around being Junior Lesbian Egon while everyone around her does funny stuff. That was sort of Egon's thing anyway. He was always super serious.
