re: Game of Thrones S7E1 "Dragonstone" Maester thread, no dummies allowed

quote:Arya has always killed with a purpose/reason. She's even changed her list before to remove the Hound. That scene wasn't for her and it didn't change or humanize her. It was for the audience more than anything. A reminder that this game is only for the high born. The soldiers and common people, regardless of house affiliation, are good normal people on the whole. Seeing her check the weapons while continuing to play her part as a simple traveler, is just the writers staying true to who she is.
I saw it differently, more as humanizing Arya. We've seen her taking names and killing enemies to her, but she has chosen to stay against those enemies and not expand the list. Certainly she'd be fully justified in slaughtering Lannister men, but she chose not to. She has changed a lot, but she is still the same soft hearted little girl that was traveling with the hound through it all.

I actually kind of like the idea that this is basically a WMD run amuck. The idea that ramifications of the war between the Children and the First Men could last this long ties a lot with the themes in AFFC about the lords not understanding the implications of their wars for the common folk.
I wish that they explored this more - maybe the will - but they mentioned it in the first half of last season and not really since. Its a very compelling question and theme.

Women traveling alone is incredibly reckless in westeros. Which is why she tried to look like a boy when she was traveling with the nights watch.

Can the night king speak? Will he ever converse with jon
Yes, but he is restricted to ice puns like Arnold from Batman & Robin

speaking of speech
best part about last night's episode? Danny getting one whole line

When we see her, she is holding the wine skin they've all been passing around. You really want to doubt how many people she can take out at once with a little wine after that cold open?

How can I catch up GOT? Where to watch?

Here's another one of my "small gripes":
Why is Tormund so eager to go back to the Wall as the first line of defense to the realm that doesn't even want them there? I get that he's loyal to Jon, but if he's really looking out for his people, he's just fricked them all. Not to mention, most of the fighters have been killed off by the Night's Watch and Stanis. So it's not like he'd have a huge fighting force up there. Just didn't feel right to me.

Emilia should be thanking her lucky stars she locked in a role for the whole show.

bran made the king go mad,
It would be some shite if somehow Bran caused the mad King to go madder and start shouting Burn them all. But instead of talking about the people of king's landing, he was talking about the White Walkers

Either way, "lack of tension" is a pretty pissy thing to bitch about.
I think the scene was not just to give ES a cameo. It was to show Arya that the people she is trying to kill are just normal folk with normal lives. They have to fight because if they don't, the Lannisters will throw them out of their homes and their families will starve.

i've heard this exact theory before but i don't like it
i really hate the whole time travel shite they started last season

If they pull that shite with Bran and the mad king, I will probably stop watching. Madness runs in the Targaryen line (Danny has some flashes of it). There is no reason to introduce that as the reason for his madness.

Yeah, it's the theory I hate the most next to Tyrion being Aerys son. It deprives Aerys of any responsibility of what he's done.

bitching about it though, that's bitching.
you're having a tough day. maybe we can have a 3rd thread that serves as a safe space.

yeah, she can kill all of them in a setup like that...but sitting there with her weapon down, 10 on 1 in straight combat...no way.
speaking of that cold open though...

that one line had me sitting on the edge of my seat.
I don't know if the show conveys what a big moment that is, the targaryens once again holding dragonstone...that it is her launch point for an invasion of westeros like aegon used it before. that the table she's looking upon was made by aegon for the same purpose
so that one line was pretty perfect. what do you say that reflects the enormity of a moment like that? nothing, you just get to work.
