Apples and oranges. By saving him, I mean "doing your duty" is a big deal for Brienne. Why didn't they show her cut his head off? Is her duty to kill Stannis or to protect Sansa?

Yep. He didn't spend 5 books worth of writing to waste off what is arguably the main character. Jon has accomplished nothing in the grand scheme of the storyline. It's all been buildup. The dude is most certainly not going to end up dead (or maybe he will, but Milesandre has something to say about that).

If Kit is filming for next season there is no way that will be able to be kept under wraps until next season. The number of people desperate to know Jon's fate just skyrocketed, and I'd be surprised if it didn't slip that he was filming this year.
