Sure they could. Just send them 15-20 miles east or west. It would take longer but i don't think any of the Night's Watch will be leaving the Castle any time soon. Especially if Mance just keeps persisting with little attacks at the gate to keep the Watch busy and never give them rest.
But anyway the point being, the wildlings are absolutely a huge threat and pretty much guaranteed victory unless Jon kills Mance or somehow works out some deal for them to work with the Night's Watch against the White Walkers.

It was just one episode
Yeah, an entire one.

What I am saying is that I trust the writers devoted time to this for a reason. By doing so, I think jon will rise as a crucial character. I mean this show has gone 4 seasons and most of what has happened are people dying plotting for the throne. There are killer ghost people coming with a hellstorm of a winter. This has always been the plan. The story in kings landing cannot go on forever due to external factors.
I trust them as well, but that doesn't mean that I can't be disappointed in on episode or two. And they're catering to their audience anyway, not me specifically, so it's whatever. But I felt like a lot of time was wasted that they could've used on other things happening.
And you keep alluding to the white walkers, but you do realize that last night had almost nothing to do with that, right? This is Mance and his army versus people south of the wall. Once the WWs hit, I imagine shite will hit the fan and all humans will be fighting them (instead of each other). So really, this whole "winter is coming/White Walker" thing is still not being touched upon at all, and last night's episode did nothing to advance that really, outside of perhaps a couple of generalities.

shite, yeah..that's the first I've seen of that poster, and the episode definitely doesn't live up to that poster. Not even close actually.
That poster should be on every page of this thread. I was expecting "300:night's watch Spartans " with the way they kept talking about how the odds were stacked against them so much. Instead mance sends twelve guys up the wall and maybe 4,000 troops with two giants and a mammoth just to get a feel for the defenses.
I was mislead. Again, great episode. Nice tracking shots, I liked Jons fight with the big thenn and Thornes fight with Tormund.

I hope they develop the wildlings more as we go forward. Right now there are only 2 alive that we have ever met.
This show hammers "there is no good or evil" constantly, and yet so far the wildlings are just sort of portrayed as a faceless evil threat. We have one small interaction with Mance and that's it.
I would like them and their motivation to be better fleshed out so that the conflict at the wall can advance beyond good on one side of the wall and bad on the other.

I wouldn't say the Wildlings have been shown as evil. Some of the groups yes... like the cannibals. But for the most part I have always looked at them as an under developed group of people, who have been conquered and forced to live north of the wall.

It was entertaining, but nothing happened.
The current leader of the Night's Watch died

Do you really believe that the wildlings are going to win this battle? I could be completely wrong here, but I don't see any way that happens.

Did Thorne actually die tho? I saw him get wounded in the belly and dragged away from the fray.

They may not. But if they do lose it will not be because of the night's watch. I only see 3 ways they can possibly lose.
1. Jon Snow succeeds in his mission.
2. Stanis shows up and wrecks shop.
3. The Walkers hit the Wildlings from the other side.

I'm not really sure. I saw what you saw, but everyone is saying that Jon Snow is the leader now, so I guess he died

I'm trying to think of anything that could happen at the Wall to make this episode 9 worthy.
Any doubt Ygritte dies in Jon's arms?

Page 1, lucky guess, I suppose.
i know this poster and guarantee you he's not a reader. and he's almost cocomo level anti spoiler.

You're probably right, but I'm not entirely intrigued by those options because the end result of the wildlings losing is the same. Right now I feel like I'm just waiting to see how the wildlings screw this up.
They just don't feel like a legitimate threat because I see no way that the win this thing.

yes obviously, they call them "wildlings" for a reason. Unbeknownst to most, Ling berries harbor an intense poison within their seeds, which the uncivilized wilds of the north use on their weapons so that a single pierce is death. It's obvious to anyone who pays attention to the show.

They set him up to be the biggest a-hole in the watch since season 1 and they let him die off screen?
Let's assume he's alive and Jon's temporary head assistant manager of the nights watch for now. That's too big a character to kill off screen and not even say for certain if he died or not.

I don't think he died. But I think he is seriously injured and incapable of leading at this point.

I loved the episode, but even if you didnt like it, why wouldnt you just trust the writers at this point? Yall are acting like SFP now in the True Detective threads.... "they didnt do this, they didnt address this....they are gonna run out of time to address this"... holy frick. Calm down.
+ a gazillion

It would be an awesome surprise if we were exposed to all of that only to have Jon Snow killed by Mance Raider(sp) at the beginning of next weeks episode. I have my fingers crossed that both Snow and Bran are whacked next week.

Underrated moment last night: Jon smashing in that guy's skull with ball peen hammer.
Yeah that was awesome. From that scene, I also took Jon learning tactics from past fights. Eg. He spits in the face of the Thenn to gain the upper hand which he learned that dirty tactic in his fight against Karl.

Hey guys, sorry i'm not reading the past 5 pages but I just wanted to throw in my two cents...
....First, that huge blade they dropped on the climbers was bad arse! I truly expected Sam to turn around with that cross bow and kill Yegrette(sp?). Does JS expect Mance to accept that he has been with the wildlings all along? Also, I wish that Gillie would have killed that pussy watchman from kings landing!!!
Overall, a very good episode...the fighting was a little non realistic but whatever!
