Haven't read the books, but Dinklage is amazing so far and is creating my favorite character.

great episode, so much to love. The intro to King's Landing was great and it was a restrained yet very revealing scene between Ned and Jaime in the throne room. Loved the scene between Ned and Arya. Loved Arya getting fencing/fighting lessons. Jon Snow emerging into a leader at the wall was great. Nan's stories were cool. Tyrion is an interesting character--just enough Lannister to know you shouldn't trust him but really damn likable... but the very best part for me was Viserys getting *pwned!
About time!
I should stay, I am reading the book, but lagging behind the episodes currently, which I rather like. I may continue to do that this first season.

Will it spoil the HBO series if I start reading it? I don't want to get ahead because this show is so fricking great. I wouldn't mind some more detail on the characters though.

I think having read the book has made the series even greater. There are a lot of small details that i pick up that I would have never seen without the book.
Also IMO the story is so great that there is nothing wrong with going over it twice in different mediums.

I'm currenlty reading the book, and am about even with the show as of last night. Obviously the book is more detailed and is better, but the show is really good too. The show has been leaving some things out, but due to time, they are probably inconsequential. FWIW, i'm on page 250 out of 800 or so. So this first season could be the whole first book.

the shows been good, but has missed on some things, and I'm not typically one to nitpick. The most glaring is the downplaying of the direwolves, which are far from inconsequential. As it is, when Ghost finally pops back up, ppl will wonder where the hell he's been all this time. Bran's wolf was MIA after last week started showing how important he is to Bran.

We are in about the same spot. I am going to try and stay a little ahead of each episode.

Not showing Ghost to this point is really, really perplexing. Very odd.

What if it was simple as they couldn't find a grown albino dog?

i dont think he realized how she would emerge into someone more powerful than himself when he used her as a pawn. and, i think hes going to be a static character in the sense that his personality will not evolve. its a nice stark contrast between the two of them
also, i havent read the books, and peopela refreaking out about spoiling things.
whats the best thread to share theories with non-readers?
because i have a few...

there's another long thread somewhere on here ab theories, but it's full of real spoilers so I'm not sure if that's one you wanna start reading if you haven't read the books. If you're just speculating this thread would be fine if you preface it asking for ppl not to confirm/deny. Still some ppl struggle w/ keeping spoilers to themselves

I think you could go either way--I have purposely waited on reading some books until after seeing the movie (esp when there are a series of them, like Harry Potter) because the movies are actually good and can be enjoyed on their own merit when you don't have to join in the chorus of "oh the books are SO much better" and pooh-pooh it right off the bat... Others, I have wanted to finish the books first and thought it helped to understand the backstory first, like LOTR (of course, that was just an exceptional adaptation)... Here, I find that the actors and the story of GoT are really good and stand on their own well, but reading afterwards gives me nice insight, but I like not knowing what is coming when I tune in on Sundays to the show, so I am sticking with reading behind the show for now. I am sure that will go by the wayside once this season is over though.

I havent read the books, and dont plan too.
a couple of questions on the show...
what is the significance of the Wall?
Winterfell??? Is that a territory of some sort?
what do they keep talking about a "long winter"? does it coincide with Winterfell?
Jon Snow is Ned Starks son from a previous marriage?
what is the significance of the direwolfs? why do only Starks own them, or at least significant to them in the show?
There are 3 major royal families in the show as far as I can tell..Starks, Baretheons, and Lannisters? Is that correct? Any certain family holds upper hands? In terms of army size, or tenure, or other outside variable? seems like Starks are almost peasant -like, at least in appearance and workmanship...
^^^Seems like a lot of tension between all 3 of them, though King Robert and Ned seem like old friends?
where do the blonde headed ones fit in that look like twins? The female one that bangs the swole guy with the pony tail...
I know i have a lot of questions, a lot may be obvious. Sometime with the way they speak, a lot of it is hard to understand. And it seems like they kind of just jumped into everything, im sure along the way it will come together, but im just trying to piece it together.
If you cant answer any of the questions above without spoiling anything, just skip over it.

Viserys doesn't have a sister. He is the court Eunuch with an information-gathering spy network all over the place. If you're talking about Jaime Lannister, the queen's brother, then yes, I see what you're saying. But he does develop a lot. She is a PRIMO bitch!
You're thinking of Varys.
