what is the significance of the Wall?
Keeps wildlings and other things out of Winterfell and the rest of the 7 realms. Those zombie things from the first episode are one of the things it is made to keep out.
quote:
Winterfell??? Is that a territory of some sort?
Winterfell is one of 7 realms that makes up the kingdom.
quote:
what do they keep talking about a "long winter"? does it coincide with Winterfell?
The seasons don't last a specific amount of time. This current summer lasted 9 years, so they expect an equally long winter. "Winter is coming" is just a phrase the Starks use to warn their kin to be ready for bad things.
quote:
Jon Snow is Ned Starks son from a previous marriage?
Ned married Cat, got her pregnant with Robb, went off to battle, and got another woman pregnant with Jon. The realms all have different names for bastards' last names. Snow is Winterfell's.
quote:
what is the significance of the direwolfs? why do only Starks own them, or at least significant to them in the show?
Sigil of the Starks. Each child of Ned's got one and becomes sort of an image of the owner.
quote:
There are 3 major royal families in the show as far as I can tell..Starks, Baretheons, and Lannisters? Is that correct? Any certain family holds upper hands? In terms of army size, or tenure, or other outside variable? seems like Starks are almost peasant -like, at least in appearance and workmanship...
There are 7 major families. Starks are just more humble, that's why they seem like peasants. Baratheon are from a southern realm but when Robert won the war, he got the crown of the king. The Lannisters are the richest of the families. They have more than 7 powerful families, but 7 families run the 7 realms and have other families that pledge allegiance to them.
quote:
^^^Seems like a lot of tension between all 3 of them, though King Robert and Ned seem like old friends?
Ned and Robert basically went through their adolescent and teen years together learning under Jon Arryn, the former hand.
quote:
where do the blonde headed ones fit in that look like twins? The female one that bangs the swole guy with the pony tail...
Their family used to rule the 7 realms (Westeros) before Robert, Ned, and the rest overthrew them. They are the last surviving Targaryans. The brother wants to build an army of the Dothraki to take back the crown.
The first post in this thread is a much better tool for learning all this. It gives a better visual.

i dont think he realized how she would emerge into someone more powerful than himself when he used her as a pawn
no, he didn't... but it became pretty obvious when her bodyguard dude said in his dothraki accented common-tongue (otherwise known as "English") "Nuh-uh... you walk" as he took away his horse.

ahh ok will look at it. Ive only read the last 15 pages or so.
If there are 7 realms, will they all be highlighted over the certain seaons of this show?
or just the 3 or 4 so far?

I've only read the first book so far, so I don't really know how much each realm is discussed. There are characters from every one that will have parts in the story.

First season mainly focuses on the areas they've already introduced in addition to a couple more

Great episode. I really liked Littlefinger and Syrio. Thought they did a really nice job of introducing Ser Barristan, Robert spoke to him to him as an equal instead of the snarky attitude he showed towards Jaime. The scene where Ned finds Arya with Needle was well done but they left out an important exchange-wolf's blood, early graves, telling Arya she's beautiful in a roundabout way. It was touching and important to the story as well. Still, well done.

Sunday's episode should help out with the regions, as the Tournament for the Hand will be taking place.
It will introduce characters from other parts of the realm.
This same season will focus on another region as Catelyn Stark/Tully alluded to before she left Kings Landing.
(post is meant for everyone who hasn't read the novels, not you Books, since you have read and know this already

I didn't love it, but I did love the first two so its a wash I guess.
By far the least faithful to the books episode IMO. But I guess that's to be expected as we go on.
Didn't love the guy who played Littlefinger, but he was pretty good as Carcettti so we'll see.
I assume they're just having problems with the Wolves. Meaning the size of them. Maybe they think if we don't show Ghost for a while but we eventually do when he's bigger their will be less inconsistencies.

quote:i cant say I have a favorite character, but Im really interested in Tyrion, Jon, Arya, and Dany (thought her name was kalisey or whatever the Dothraki word is for queen).
Favorite part of the show, which was filled with pretty great scenes!
okay. so here are some theories* Readers, please note. I dont wish for you to confirm nor deny them. I simply wish to have a dialogue with the other non readers on their thoughts of how the plot will progress...
first, i suspect that prince Jeff isnt really Robert's child. I also think Robert suspects this based on how he treats the prince.
I think the third episode shows that Tyrion had a soft spot for Jon and his little bit of manipulation is going to help Jon take leadership of the other guys at the wall.
Im glad Ned is teaching Arya to protect herself. I feel like she is going to have to protect morethan herself if her dad is out and about doing Robert's bidding. perhaps Sansa?
I dont think Dany's brother is going to last long. I have a feeling that his pride as believing he's the rightful king will lead to his demise before he even has a chance to fight for his throne. Im hoping Dany's premonition about the sex of the baby is right and has a boy who could maybe possibly the actual potential heir to the throne.
Im curious to know how many people Jaime Lannister had killed simply because they found out about him with Queen Cersi. In the opening episode he had killed the king's right hand & threw brann off the tower.... so, my guess is that its not a first or a last.
I dont feel like Robert isnt going to last long with so many people feeling like they are the rightful kings... If it has to be a Lannister, id rather it be Tyrion cuz at least he's smart. He's like the sooth sayer to me. I know he's not taken seriously by his peers as a drunk perv, but he calls it like he sees it.

Good logic. I won't tell what you where you are on the right track and where you or off base simply because I don't want to give anything away.

She's got some things right and some things wrong, but those are some really superficial things. There is a LOT more that happens and a lot that happens "beneath the surface".
Some very shocking things are in for you viewers only.

i know i was just joking
i just thought most of that foreshadowing was pretty obvious, esp about the prince
*ETA: just b/c there is foreshadowing doesn't mean it is guaranteed to happen that way

have the producers/writers or anyone in the "making of" shows talked about if they will stick closely to the books throughout? I only ask b/c AB deviated fairly far from the books in True Blood, which is fine, b/c the show is great and much darker and better than the books in many ways, but HBO does have a precendent for deviating fairly far from the source material.
