Have you read any of his other works besides Song of Ice and Fire?

His works? Sounds so haughty. No, I've never read anything from him. I'd never heard of him before this board started coming on themselves that Game of Thrones was being made by HBO.

In Game of Thrones? Maybe I rushed through the Catelyn chapters.

Yeah I could have said books, but that wouldn't have been accurate. He spent most of his career writing short stories, screen plays, and editing anthologies.

I would suggest picking up Fevre Dream. One of my favorites...

The ending will either make you very happy or very pissed off.

Wild Cards will be his next hit, I am sure there are already studios out there thinking about purchasing the rights to see the series adapted for film.

Also, I can't wait till the Wall scenes. They are some of the best in the books, and Dinklage as Tyrion is just superb.

Still scratching my head on why they didn't include the line "his name is summer" at the very end. The ending of the second episode was so very well edited and that line is very powerful, but I guess I can't complain too much.

I would like to see Wild Cards. I think the last installment would be ideally suited to a tv show. Nothing like a group of superheros on a reality show.

I would love to see Captain Trips or Croyd Crenson on the big screen.

I wonder how that would work. If I'm not mistaken each individual character is the intellectual property of the author that created them. Martin did not create many of the actual characters in teh Wild Cards series...you also have that pesky thing where the Zelazny estate will not allow anything of his to be put in movie form after they fricked up Damnation Alley.

I don't really see Catelyn as whiny either. She is just a concerned mother.

You will see Catelyn's likability decrease the further the season goes on. She has reason to be paranoid but she strikes out at the wrong people.

I was reading last night, haven't quite caught up to where the series is yet, but i found interesting that in the movie, its Ned Stark that convinces Caitlyn he's leaving, yet in the book, Caitlyn is the one convincing Ned to leave with the king.

I for one am happy to have the show in any form and am willing to overlook the small differences.

Rome was expensive so it got cut. This show is expensive and if they start CGIing the wolves then the costs will go up even more.

The will have other things that need the CGI so we will see how far they go.

If the never grow the wolves but we get all the books done as seasons I will call that a more than fair trade.

I picked up A Game of Thrones yesterday and am really surprised how closely they are following the book. I don't think I have ever seen a show/movie based off of a book that followed the story and even some dialogue so closely. I am only on page 40 something but have yet to get past half of the first episode.

Wild Cards is a collaborative effort involving the leading scifi fantasy authors. It's been running since the early 80s so it's never really finished. The most recent series is finished, but there are close to twenty books out there.

It essentially depicts heroes as real people. Like I said the most recent series starts off as an American Idolesque competition to find America's Next Ace...

Question...

I understand the basics of hating Jon by Catlyn but is there more that was not discussed as to why she was so vile to him during his Goodbye. I may need to rewatch that part as I was destracted but it seemed the anger came out of no where. Does she really hate him that much?(that we would now at this point) I assume some of the answers will be answered later with new details of his mother?

I haven't read any, but that doesn't mean it's true in this case. It's all just personal opinion; I didn't find Bronn and Aemon any more interesting that Jon or Arya. Sandor is awesome for sure though. For example, TotH ran a huge poll and of the top 10 favorite characters were 7 were POV characters from the books LINK

Think it just illustrates how great GRRM is at character/world building that he can have such a huge cast full of interesting ppl

The show left out a line in the book from Cat to Jon that shows even more the animosity she has towards him. She's sitting next to her favorite child's sick bed and hardly slept for days, so she's not in a completely rational state of mind. But it's also a final parting shot to someone she resents bc of what he represents (Ned's infidelity).

There is more to it than just the infidelity (which is a big motivator). You guys let me know if you think this is too spoilery, I don't think it is as it isn't part of the main novels.

There are several examples in the books and real history where bastards or their heirs make a claim to family inheritance (most notably the Blackfyre rebelion, but there are other examples). Cat is worried that either John, or more likely his descendants, will come back to challange her own descendants for the rights to Winterfell and the power that comes with it. For Cat, family is everything and she views John as a threat to her family.

dont think that's a spoiler bc I doubt the show ever gets that deep into the history, but I'd forgotten all the details
