Don't ask me why, but for some ungodly reason, I always thought that was a pic of a gothed-out Taylor Swift...

Can someone give me some more information on the importance of the direwolf's in the books and the show? I haven't read the books so don't give me spoilers but some overview would be appreciated. My only understanding is based on the first two episodes, and the fact that the symbol of the North appears to be the direwolf (even though they were thought to be extinct prior to them finding them). Is that correct? Any additional info would be appreciated.

I don't believe they were extinct, just not found south of the wall. My guess of what to take from that is....why are they crossing the wall? What is driving them south? The white walkers?
ETA - no I havent read the book so no spoiler from me.

The Stark children adopt these fierce little beasts, as it is clearly an omen, for the Stark family sigil is the direwolf. The children grow to form special bonds with each of the direwolf pups, and these animals become crucial to the ongoing story of the Stark household. As the children grow and mature, so do their direwolves, shaped alike by experience. When they are first discovered, the pups are barely a handful, dependent entirely on the Starks for survival. As the direwolves develop, however, they become powerful companions and extensions of the Starks’ spirits. The direwolves and children are extremely sensitive to one another, and much can be read in their behaviour.
Anything more would be spoiler territory. And BM is correct they were not extinct.

Ok that makes more sense. Maybe they said extict in these parts when they initially found them in the first episode.

I figured but thought I would ask.

I think they said the white walkers were extinct. Since both were referred to as not being seen for a while I can see where that is confusing.

Yeah it was basically that they haven't been found south of the wall in centuries. Why or how they got south of the wall hasn't been explained so far.

Which is why the first guy was considered a deserter and crazy. But they said something to a similar effect when the direwolf's were first found, but maybe it was a classification based on their geographic location and the rarity of seeing them in those parts.

The dire wolves were said to have not been seen south of the wall in hundreds of years and the white walkers were thought to have been gone for over a thousand years. At least that is what I gathered from the first episode.

Now THAT is what I pictured Cersei looking like.
Lena Headly as a blonde just doesn't work for me. The funny thing is, as I was watching the first episode, in her scenes I kept thinking, "weird, I can see that there's some hotness in there somewhere, but I can't pick it out. Maybe I just think there's hotness because in the story she's supposed to be hot, so my TV/Movie raised brain accepts this premise and I see her as hot."
Then I did a google search on her and found pics of her as a brunette, MUCH hotter:

shes also not naked in the series. she is draped in a ton of clothing.

The book also goes into more detail about how the Starks and a few of the other old families of the North still worshiped the old nameless gods of the forest instead of the seven. When they found the wolves they first thought it was a terrible omen, (pups born from a dead mother), but Jon convinced Ned the three males and two females, (one for each of the trueborn children), were intended for the Stark children. So, at least a strong insinuation that they were a gift from the old gods.
