Question - Is this show worth watching if I haven't read the books, or do you think one needs to read the books first to watch the show?

Yes it is most definitely worth watching regardless of whether you have read the books or ever intend to.
ETA: On a side note this made me be crack up.

The book also goes into more detail about how the Starks and a few of the other old families of the North still worshiped the old nameless gods of the forest instead of the seven. When they found the wolves they first thought it was a terrible omen, (pups born from a dead mother), but Jon convinced Ned the three males and two females, (one for each of the trueborn children), were intended for the Stark children. So, at least a strong insinuation that they were a gift from the old gods.
And of course something could be inferred from the fact that it was a Stag that killed the Dire Wolf. Stag being the symbol of house Baratheon...
Was that a spoiler?

For all the talk about how Cersei looks in this I think she's been very good so far. The little things, like her facial expressions, are perfect. She has that look of a sort of bored disdain down pat.

Sure sounds like one. Damn it

I have yet to read the books so I am not on the same page with some of the stark hate on here a couple of pages back. They don't seem to be whiny to me as of yet in the show. Maybe they get that way later in the books and you guys are foreshadowing to that? I think I would be pretty pissed too if I was Catlyn and my whole family was disbanded and moved away at the request of the king. However, she did act pretty bitchy to the bastard son and her oldest daughter sucked for not siding with family. But I like Sansa, that's the tomboy right?
Anywho, great great show. Loving every minute of it so far. Hopefully I got the characters right in my questions and this post was not full of fail.

Arya is the tomboy. Sansa is the red headed count.

Ok. Then I agree with all others that Sansa sucks!

I'm about to buy this set. Kinda hard to beat it for just $20. I'm hoping I'll have them all read by S2.
LINK
Thanks for the link, just bought the set. For anyone else interested, it includes the first 4 books for under $20 and is eligible for free shipping if you get your total order up to $25.

Theyre generally not considered whiny so don't let one persons opinion color your view of the characters. Jon and arya in particulr are two of the biggest fan favorites in the series overall

Oh, I don't hate the Starks (I hate Catelyn but she's really a Tully), but without the benefit of knowning what they are thinking they can come off as a little bit whiny and stupid. Kind of like Frodo in LOTR. If you don't know about the internal struggle he is going through it looks like he just falls down and cries a lot.
I like John and Arya, but they are not the most interesting of characters. That honor is reserved for Bronn, Sandor, Tyrion and Jaime...even Aemon. This is typical of Martin he has a tendency to make his protagonists less interesting than his secondary characters.

I thought Oberyn Martel was one of the top characters as well.

He was conceived after she had already married Eddard, then brought to Winterfell to live. He is a daily reminder of her husband's infidelity.

Yeah I get that but it wasn't his fault he was born. But makes an interesting and intriguing dynamic in the family I will say that.

Maybe he just has a lot of main characters...

People need to stop being so concerned with the appearances of the actors. Hair and makeup can do what it takes to make them resemble the characters in the story but this is a television series and their acting ability should far outweigh the color of their hair, etc. Someone on here even went as far as saying that the direwolves were not big enough. Well, if that person wants the show to be a green screen for the entire time the direwolves are in a scene (which seems to be a lot and we're only two episodes in), we can have wolves the size of horses on the screen to "authenticate" the books. As is, however, is a little more realistic.

The Starks aren't whiny unless you look to Catelyn and Sansa. Arya and Jon are 2 of the best characters (but there are many others too).

I don't really see Catelyn as whiny either. She is just a concerned mother.

Just wait. She's super mild right now compared to how insane she gets.
